Terrain Normals/detail maps

Hello,

I am working on the terrain in my 3D engine and was wondering how you generated the vertex normals for your terrain in overgrowth. I have a few methods implemented but im not sure which one is the best, and how you did it in your engine. Also I am curious about the base color map that you mentioned in one of your posts about the detail maps. is it just a large high resolution texture painted by hand and stretched over the whole terrain? and then the detail maps are just blended into the terrain as described. if so could you post and example of one of them? im trying to get a better insight into how you do the terrain in the engine to better implement mine.
