President Obama visit to ASL
Posted 02/04/2009 10:45AM
The first stop on President Barack Obama’s eight-day European tour was to the American School in London, where he met with London US Embassy staff and their families to say thank you for their hard work.
President Obama was welcomed at ASL by Head of School Coreen R. Hester, Board Chair Lori E. Fields and Associate Head of School Margaret Grandy, who presented him with gifts of ASL caps and T-shirts, for himself and his family. The President also signed the School’s visitors book.
The School’s Farmer Family Gymnasium was decked with red, white and blue bunting for the visit. President Obama spoke for about 10 minutes and, joined by First Lady Michelle Obama, he shook hands and signed autographs.
One US Embassy family whose sons attend ASL shared an account of their meeting with the President. Simon, Grade 1, who is studying oceans, asked if the President knew the state fish of Hawaii.
Grade 5 student Josh, learning about Africa and researching diamond mining, asked the President for his thoughts on this issue. President Obama smiled and remarked, “Nobody briefed me on this one!” He went on to give Josh a thoughtful answer.
“It was pretty amazing,” Mrs. Hester said afterwards in a letter to the community, which included a slideshow of the event. “We invited him back to play basketball, if he needs a gym, and of course we hope they will come again, now that they know where we are.”
In case you were wondering, the state fish of Hawaii, as Simon or President Obama can tell you, is the Humuhumunukunukuapua`a, also known as the rectangular triggerfish.
