I came across a download for the Lugaru beta while Googling around. Though the zip itself was partly corrupt, the maps folder wasn't! This filled me with shivers of intrigue... until I discovered that they were all in a different format from current maps and so wouldn't run.

Yes. And they have such intriuging filenames too..
I have a couple versions of the map loading code, not the version used to make those maps but.. wouldn't be too hard to figure out and write a converter.
