Framerate's fine for me, and I don't exactly have the most powerful hardware around.
How's your framerate when they get caught?
Part of the problem seems to be staves. They don't intersect well with landscape. Try spinecrushing the staff bunny on the stairs in Stairs and watch his staff fly.
