installing on linux

i just downloaded the demo of lugaru. From what Ive seen its a good game. Only problem is that I haven't been able to get it going.
I´m running xubuntu linux,
1.7Ghz intel celerom processor,
394mbRAM,
Nvidia 128mb graphics card
i.e. waay over the recomended specs.
I run the installer executable in terminal.
The first error that comes up is that the installer says ¨Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux¨ and I am running Xubuntu (which for all practical purposes is Ubuntu).
Next problem is when it asks if I want to install Symbolic links to a directory in my path, but the path it comes up with (/usr/bin/local), it has no write permissions for.
Once I finally got to the actual install, it seemed to work. . . . .but then at the end it says ¨installation complete, would you like to start now? I tell it yes and it just goes back to shell prompt and nothing else happens.
It also didn't ask WHERE to install the program, and /usr/local/games is empty
am i going mad?
or is there something else that i´m missing?

I am assuming you're installing it as a normal user.
You have to install the game as root. In Ubuntu setups, it is preferred to use sudo for root operations. Then Lugaru can actually write into /usr/local
The installer appears to ignore the fact it can't actually write files into that directory.

Yeah, I just went to the terminal, typed in "sudo " and then dragged the installer file over to the terminal. Or perhaps you can just install it in your home folder? But I could never get the game to run well. It crashes after clicking a menu item in the main menu. I guess I'm missing some dependencies I don't know about.

hooray!!!!!
it worked . . . . .sort of
I went into /usr/local/games/lugaru and opened the ¨lugaru¨ shell script in terminal and got the following message:
./lugaru-bin: error while locating shared librarys: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
so im not mad

Hahah, at least you get an informative error.
When it tells you that you're missing a shared library, you're probably missing a common library that can be found via apt-get or Synaptic (does Xubuntu even have that?).
You most likely have to download libstdc++6, so in your terminal run the command: sudo apt-get install libstdc++6
That should fix that particular error.
P.S. Lugaru reaally needs to inform users what dependencies they need. I'm missing something Xlib-related.
P.S.S. To [try to] fix my problem I went
here, then another error came up related to me having a 64-bit system so then I tried to fix it by downloading a 32-bit libSDL from
here which then only showed me 'Segmentation Fault' as my error when clicking a menu. I wanna play.

well I typed in to terminal: sudo apt-get install libstdc++6 and it toodled off for a while and did what it was supposed to do. but when I ran the lugaru script I got the same error. so I went into package manager (yes xubuntu does have it( while im on the subject the ONLY difference between ubuntu and xubuntu is that ubuntu runs the GNOME desktop and xubuntu runs the Xfce desktop. kubuntu which is another spin-off runs the KDE(K Desktop Enviroment). its almost like: same OS, different skin but little bit more complicated

lol it took me a whlle to get that))
. . . .um. . . .anyway back to the topic.
opened package manager and searched for libstdc++6 and installed the first on the listbut the error message was still there
P.S. I installed the windows version (on windows, lol would be interesting on linux) and got it working in about 5min

but the computer was a school server, the OS is windows server 2003 (or because of somthing else that i have no idea about) the computer will freeeze for about 1/2 to 2sec's, and then carries on like normal but freezes again next time in combat or running or somthing.
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT THOUGH!!!!!!
hehe have to wait until lappy gets back from repairs and play it properly.

It's great that you enjoy it!
And I know what *ubuntu's are.

I was just asking because some applications have features which make it work the best on a specified desktop environment. Particularly GNOME stuff.
I really wonder what's up with my Lugaru, though. The only thing it gives me after crashing after clicking a menu item is "Segmentation fault".

lol when I explain the *ubuntus* to most people they end up looking a bit like this
the only problem that im having (other then the periodic freezing mentioned above) is there is no sound. this is over the whole OS, not just lugaru though
