LOST: knife, shiny, reward if found.
So after losing my mind a bit searching endlessly for my knife while doing the castle in reluctant assassin, I tried a few things -
Make a brighter knife texture ( slightly better, seems hard to spot in sand)
Modified 'grassdirt' and 'mossrock' textures. There's no more rocks, or knife shaped pieces of debris.
This helped a bit. But still that knife would elude my gaze.
I've since noticed -
It can get stuck in walls, trees.
It can land straight up, making it harder to spot.
Visible part of a terrain probably is different then the bounding box, and perhaps a knife can get lost in between somewhere.

Change the texture of the knife to a flaming hot pink colour.
More seriously; if you're finding some maps too dark, just try changing the SkyLight value to something higher in debug mode.

Some knife models are really hard to see... some of my favorites for shape, too. The Talon is so cool looking, but I just give up after about 30 seconds of searching when I have it loaded. oh well.
Does the original throwing-style knife have some included "glint" animation attached to it? I noticed that from some angles you'd get a little reflective bling-- or maybe it was my imagination 'cause I was just so happy to finally find the dang thing in the sand.
It would be nice to be able to pull a knife out of a tree, too, but I still love that it goes "Clang" when it bounces off a rock or wall.

The knife does shine from a distance, yes. Quite helpful in looking for it.
Re: LOST: knife, shiny, reward if found.
I suppose you could find some way to make the glint more common.
Re: LOST: knife, shiny, reward if found.
I think I have a solution;
I give you
Lugaru with outlines let those knives escape your eyes no more.
Try it yourself! Simply download the archive attached, backup the lugaru binary and replace it with the one from the archive. to enable the outline make sure the detail setting in the menu is at least medium(low is off). Performance-wise, the game shouldn't be affected by this too much. It now renders the bodies and weapons twice using a stencil buffer, nothing fancy.
I'm not sure where I took the source from and it needs more dynamic libraries now. I tested this mod and it seems to work fine. Note, though, that I'm a mere hack of a programmer, taking no responsibility from potential damage to your computer/opinion of lugaru.

that almost makes me think of a cell shaded lugaru. that'd be weird.

Well that is kind of nifty, but if it could be toggled say, with tab or something...
I've since gotten more proficient at tracking the knife. With my de-noised ground textures, I really only worry about those knives that bounce to an unobtainable position.

Sorta reminds me of XIII anybody else remember that game?
Re: LOST: knife, shiny, reward if found.
Somebody should retexture the game to be all cartoony and then apply the outline mod.
Re: LOST: knife, shiny, reward if found.
It would be great if the glint was a little more pronounced. And perhaps got shinier the closer you got too it, or even maybe perhaps shinier the further you got to a point.
Or maybe a "locate nearby items" skill. Similar to Diablo II?

Yeah, I recently started playing lugaru on invertin's PC, and one of the main things I noticed with the knife was that it was hard to find it at times, maybe if the knife were to be slightly shinier in overgrowth...

Ladies and Gentlemen and Ninja Rabbits!!!
I present to you the Rainbow Shine!
You can use save picture as to save it to your desktop, but backup your original shine just in case you dont like it after you replace it.
I hope this solves your problems.

Actually, I think the knife has an automatic shine if you miss and an auto-shine from afar.
