Very hard maps, download, unzip, enjoy

Post by rudel_ic » Mon Aug 29, 2005 11:41 pm

I built 3 very difficult maps with Lugaru for Lugaru. I did that with the Windows XP version. Don't ask me if you run into problems.

I quote my .zip comment:

Code: Select all

3 Hard Maps for Lugaru

bridge - Senseless slaughter right from the beginning
coward - You know you are one if you killed them all
stairs - Disturbing, different, damn you if you do it

Have fun and don't come to me if you're frustrated,
I succeeded at least once in every map

Made with the WinXP built of Lugaru

Some custom comments with small hints:
bridge - 2 swords. No mercy. No chance either. 2 hits and you're dead. Use the force - and the environment.
coward - It's obvious, you're a damn coward. You wouldn't kill others from behind if you weren't. You wouldn't run for your life if you weren't. What a coward you are.
stairs - There are 3 ways down, but just 1 way up. Sometimes you've got to look at and jump on things from a greater distance.

Every level has 8 enemies. Every enemy has either a sword or a stick. You've got 2 weapons at the beginning, doesn't matter though, you'll lose them sooner or later.

I'm thinking about integrating this into a storyline, but it's also fun without it.

Where to unzip? Lugaru/Data/Maps
How to start? Read the console guide, basically "map bridge" to start bridge

And cheating is boring. Don't do it.

If anyone does a decent run and has filmed it, don't hesitate to upload it to yousendit.com or whatever.

May be distributed freely. Do whatever you want with it.

That doesn't matter, it's just PR. ;)

"Lugaru Master", haha... I can't wait until Lugaru 2 is out with multiplayer mode to show you where you belong. :D

Uh, since when am I a developer of Lugaru 2? That was an assumption, of course.

Just 1 map today. That one is way harder than the previous ones - and way beautier.

I quote my .zip comment:

Code: Select all

1 Hard Map for Lugaru

arena - High in the sky, a hero needs no prove his skills

I haven't succeeded in this map yet

Due to the high number and high density of objects, your framerate may be low

8 enemies, just a knife at the beginning. Have fun.

(Click "Free" at the bottom of that page to access the Download)

Oh, please comment the maps.

Isn't "coward" great fun, by the way? I can't stop playing it :)

One more thing: I'll release map packages every 13 maps, but until then, you'll have to bear with small groups of maps, even single maps (just like arena). When map packages are done, I will link to the presentation post in the first post. I don't want to re-package everything once a map is done ;)

The presentation post will contain a link to the package, the .zip comment and all screenshots.

Yeah, unfortunately. I don't have a way to avoid them though, for obvious reasons. Thanks for mentioning it, it's worth some effort to look out for that.
The framerate never went lower than 24 fps at my box on my maps, at least not while I was stress-testing them. 24 fps is absolutely okay in my opinion.

Rough specs:

CPU: 1.49 Ghz
Memory: 512 MB RAM
Gfx chip: Nvidia GF4 TI 4200 (2 monitors plugged to it, both used simultaneously)
OS: Windows XP professional

The game is configured for maximum quality, resolution is 1280x1024. No FSAA.

I haven't tried recording TV to disk and / or running some random greedy java application while kicking bunny faces, but who cares..

The ugly part of overlapping objects is that if you want to build a complex scene with compact object placement, you won't have an alternative to living with them at some points.
One cause for this is the steering and the imprecise approximation where the object gets placed when you press "m". The approximation of the user is meant, of course.
It would have made life easier if there would have been a simple rule for placement relative to the protagonist, i.e. "feet of protagonist touch outer limit of object at any rotation".
Another cause is the limited flexibility of the deletion order of objects.
And the fact that objects can't be altered (like
"add face that's exactly orthagonal to player's feet with size of x and y and texturing of last object" or
"add faces that close the object" or
"cut off faces at edges to get rid of face parts that don't enclose space" or even
"divide all faces into in-an-object-part-of-face and not-in-an-object-part-of-face and get rid of all inner faces").
One more cause that comes to my mind immediately is the equal sizing of objects into all directions.

But I don't want to bash the game. All these flaws in the editor are obvious enough to not discuss them. Besides, I wouldn't know how to code such OpenGL voodoo, anyway.

Nice work, man! Keep up the good work!

And Levbot, you have made a handful of levels too, correct?
But doesn't those only work for the Mac version of Lugaru? :'<

Im in!

Only if I knew how to do it... :s

I really liked the levels... I think a map where like you have three or two, perhaps one, enemy at one site and then you have to take down one or two at another site... So that you kill one group, then go on to another, and when youve slaughtered the last group at a special place, level is over. You should not be able to skip groups... It should be like gaurds you have to take down... To not allow to skip guards, it must be inside a building... It would be cool like having one bunny, then two, then a wold, then a wolf and a bunny, then three bunnys! or two... That would rule... Also have like just a normal room for the first bunny, for the second group let the battle take place in like places you can jump at and stuff... Then in a place where you can go round and round... Then the "bad guy(s)" somewhere where you can escape, like several rooms but if you enter the wrong one (wolfs separate when chasing you) you are faced with a wolf as well as another one the one that was chasing you.... gaaah,... Hope you understand what im talking about...

because i cannot help with the map-drawing itself, dont know how.... if you want me to i can paint the rooms and where to place groups and such in photoshop.. or paint.

I'll contribute a map.
I already had some work done on it.. but it was in a very old version of Lugaru and now it crashes when you load it.
I can assure you it is like no other Lugaru map you have played before ;)

Wow, feedback :')

Post by rudel_ic » Sun Sep 04, 2005 10:59 am

Thanks for playing my maps! Thanks for the positive feedback!

All of my maps are free as the wind, add them to map-packs, that would be a great honor for me. If you do, please say so and link to the map-pack in this thread, I don't have to add them to a map-pack myself then. Thanks.

If anybody wants me to cooperate with him in some way, PM me. I can realize map ideas, take over parts in map series, do other things that don't come to my mind right now.

Just be patient, I'm not always online, replies may take 3 days max :)
