Talesworlds have got the idea, and you should use it.

1. Create amazing singleplayer game.
2. Watch everyone go OMGOMGOMGOMG.
3. Create multiplayer version with promised new editions for singleplayer.
4. Open beta
5. Watch the OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG explode as a Steam deal comes on and everyone buys the first and then the expansion when it comes out.

You forgot phase 0:
0. Allow interested people to pre-order and play the early beta versions of the game as they keep becoming more and more amazing.

And as it happens, Wolfire is currently doing that.

If the game sells well, they might eventually do an expansion, but as a Mount&Blade supporter who doesn't even remember how many years ago I bought the beta, I'd say there's no need to hurry.

Surely Our Blessed Devs, Maytheyliveforever, have it all under control already. They're doing absolutely fine financially(AFAIK), and are very nearly being exalted by the fans. Why change a working formula, the changing of which would take precious development time?
