Game: Blockland

A great online multiplayer sandbox game where you build with Lego's. Though this game isn't created by the Lego corporation it was created by Eric Hartman all by him self on the Torque engine.

History: Blockland was first originally a free game at its very first beta form.

As you can see it looks like Lego, but it wasn't a commercial game therefore Lego didn't sue Badspot.

Since this game was open source people modified it and created other games.

When Eric finished the game and released it for 20$ he changed the player model, updated the engine, and basically started a new.

Add to thread: I forgot to say that this game is an FPS, and a 3DS. You can switch these views by simply pressing the Tab key.

A nice trick to create a reflection allusion, when really he rebuilt the hallways upside down under the transparent bricks.

Oldest trick in the retro mapping book :P ... (although its a pretty cool trick when done just right) ...

I wonder if he had incorporated algorithms that reduce brick redundancy ... such as compress common build patterns such as the alternating wall design ...

It would really reduce the poly count on high detail levels

Which is about a million verticies, and 1.5 million triangles ... if you could reduce, say, 4 bricks into a diamond shaped design that auto swaps whenever that combination is made, you could save about 12 triangles per every 4 bricks ... increasing that number to around 170k while decreasing overall map file size ...

Increase your "block" compression and more poly saving could be done ...

Then again the effort probably wouldn't be worth it :P ...

There's a huge difference. I was a long time (5 years) Wolfire member before I started pumping out indie game threads. Not to mention, I had over 2000 posts and still regularly contribute to other things when I find it necessary. Usually, I don't muck around in the SPF forum too long because other people can explain much better than I can and I'm just wasting space. Don't forget that I also preordered. :lol:

Riot here, came in and made his post about the history of Blockland, added a huge amount of pictures, copied Colicedus' (I'm still not used to chainsaw_man and never will be, frankly) obsession with Duke Nukem and well...hasn't posted anywhere but this thread.

I have a good reason to believe it's either shameless self-promotion or spam. In either case, I'll be damned if I don't make sure someone posts about Overgrowth on the Blockland forums. =P

Anyway, what are you on about with shameless self-promotion? You promote your own things that you do all the time. There's no difference, unless it's a bot. If it is a bit, it's a bot with PHENOMENAL context-detection functions.

Personally I prefer Minecraft but that's probably because the demo for Blockland has basically no gameplay value. (Last I checked at least)

Get the full version of Blockland, then compare. The demo still has no value. Also Blockland now has brick physics.

Ah, but I'm not trying to sell anything. I also have reason to believe that he'll disappear as soon as Blockland interest dies down and never purchase a Wolfire product. :P

That, and I actually have gone on forums and promoted Wolfire in turn for posting about their games here.

No, I'm interested in buying Overgrowth, and I'm planning to stay.

Ontopic: Its a fun game, really addicting actually. If you played Gmod, Blockland is about 75% addicting as that.
