If you're already behind someone, just pop 'em in the back of the head a few times with an automatic and you're good to go. Human shields are always a plus, though :P
Melee attacks are usually considered "silent" in video games. Therefore, if you have the time, it keeps you from giving away your position longer and allows you to sneak around more and potentially get the jump on more players. Comparably to using say, a silenced pistol, most knife attacks are instant kill and you don't have to aim them, although you do have to get really close. It also gives the player more options than just shooting someone, and gamers like options. in the end melee attacks are a situational, specialized attack, they aren't really meant to be relied upon in a game with fully automatic weapons and explosives.

Were you referring to it as a "Best" or "Worst" ending?
Personally, I found it to my liking.

MGS3 has one of the best endings I've ever seen. Very tear-jerking. The ending to MGS4 (Big Boss' death) is also much more profound once you know about the ending to MGS3.

Okay, mine worst ending would be from Outlander.
I wasted my whole afternoon dodging bikers and helicopters only to find out the main ending was not even worth half of the things I had done ingame.
The ending goes like this,
After defeating a huge ass cyborg the main character walks up to an old man and the old man starts talking gibberish. After that my character happily exclaims that the old man must have gone crazy and then walks away with him.
I could complete the game again and record a video on an emulator but after experiencing that ending, I shattered my cartridge with the sheer strength of my hands at the age of 9. I don't know what would I do now.

The fudge are you waiting for? Arguably one of the best games I've ever played (though admittedly nonsensical if you haven't kept up with the main series)

PS3's to not be 250 quid.

Please be mindful of such blunders in the future.

I'll lend you mine if you're gentle with it :)

And damn, 250 quid? That's like $460 USD. Over here it's $299 now.
