Even so, they are a huge improvement on what one usually sees. The male hero characters are also often shown without helmets, too - not quite as often, but frequently.

The problem is, most male characters look like Taric from LoL

Ok, I may be exagerating a little bit (God, Taric is gay.)

While they should look like that:

Gems are truly outrageous. :D

I see this thread has struck a nerve.

There's lots of ridiculous designs out there, but you have to remember that games can't blindly imitate real life. There's lots of things that could be done better, but people like variation and exaggeration, and there's only so much you can do while you stick to real life. In real life, it can be hard to distinguish two guys wearing the same type of armor, but that's bad game design.

Also, as I've noticed in a recent school project, it's much easier to make a drawing that screams "an evil warrior" when you draw a guy in black and red and give the armor a few sharp corners, or the blade a slight impression of a jagged edge. It's not realistic, but when you have a time limit, you'll take the shortcut.

So im gnna go ahead and say this to be honest i agree with both sides on one hand i think there should be female characters in the game but on the other hand i kind of agree that it would be wierd to be seen dismembering females, but one thing is for sure and that is your comments on the tomb raider game, think of it as this, lets say tomb raider had male character it would probably still be alled tomb raider right ? and the series and films would have been just as popular as it has with angelina jolie in it, the reason why it is percieved as "porn" if you really think that its poorn is because sick minded individuals take the time to pause the screen AND LOOK AT HER BOOBIES rather than looking at the in depth story behind the films and games. The developers of the films didnt go "OHH OHH lets put a female character in it because then it wil be like pon and millions of men and women will masturbate over our film" lool no nooooo i think they just chose a female character because they want to appeaal to a specific audience, not for people to look at and get all horny but appeaal to that audience for money and profits, the same as with overgrowth, i think the developers want to keep it as male characters because then it apeeals to the audience of young teenagers and early aDULTS WHO JUST LOVE TO PLAY AS A HUGE MUSCLEY MAN KCIKING SOME KARATE ASS. AM I RIGHT ? PLEASE COMMENT BELOW IF YOU AGREE ? shit sorry i had caps lock on :) i mean its the same the developers of overgrowth arent going to say YES !! lts put female characters in so that millions of boys will get horny NOOO, ok its to do with personal preference with how they want there game to be percieved and what audience they are appealing to, and besides overgrowth and tomb raider are completely different things so you cannot compare them. cheerz guys im not angry so dont ban me from the forums please i just think there were some silly ommnts and relations to tomb raider tht needed to be cleared up with my own opnions thanks !! :D bye bye

Prime example, and one I applaud, is the Guild Wars 2 female Charr, and this interesting blog explaining the design decision to give them felinesque mammary. It might be easier on the developer to follow a similar path, to save some time with modelling clothing/weighting to accommodate, though kudos to the weight painters who actually enjoy it. ;)

A female character that's more beast than man. Sounds good to me. :)
also i know ive said some things different but i do agree with this opinion to an extent, good comment buddy, there are DEFINENTLY other ways to show female qualities without giving her MAHOOSIVE BOOBIES and hips :P lmao

Hum, I'm not against breasts as long as it doesn't end up looking like this:
Image
Srsly? Big nuff? Skimpy nuff?

The glob post about this mentioned how they definitely wanted to avoid hypersexualizing their characters. I totally agree with that effort, but it doesn't mean you can't use breasts at all. They can remain an option if they aren't oversized and aren't made too much a focal point in character design, then I wouldn't mind them being used.
I guess what I'm saying is that I don't want Overgrowth to become a C-C-C-Combo whore, big swords, skimpy-womaned breasts JRPG.
I don't mind oriental themes and influences, but there is a point where I have to say "WT FUCK, Japan? Srsly? I've got more boob on my screen than violence." And then I play Overgrowth, or Dead Space or Mount and Blade (Mmm, Mount and Blade) or Spyro the Dragon. Or I don't even get those sort of games in the first place.
Which makes me want to ask quickly. Anyone tried Metroid Other M? I haven't seen anything of it, but I know it had moved away from Prime's design and gameplay. Is it any good?

Yeah, what bugs me isn't just the boobtacular armor and clothes, it's that it just pushes me out of the story because it looks unreal. Any actual woman fighting wouldn't put up with it for a second, any more than any man fighting would, so dumb armor just looks dumb on anyone, and anti-immersive.

Now everyone likes their stuff to look cool to one degree or another, so you do get more and less fancy armor and those without money get the poorer make, or poorer fit, or less protection.

Strict realism isn't required-- after all in this game rats and rabbits will be able to beat wolves if the player has skillz-- but if you're going to claim a real social world with, kids, young, old, male, female, fat, thin, muscley and all the other types, the clothing and armor design has to make some sense. The challenge is to make it make sense and still be interesting and unusual. Like the rope-and-wood block armor that the rabbit and dog models are already sporting.

And I know the devs and the modders are up to it here!

while I did greatly enjoy much of the gameplay and how close it brought me to the feeling of the original metroids I knew and loved, I hated how much they emphasized her femininity and threw stories about it all over the place.

Cool, although I'm sad that they did that. I heard that their intent was to develop her more as a character and is a well-intentioned goal, but kind of seems like it detracts from Metroid. I'll have to get it and try it out some time.

I already felt like I knew her well enough, it distracted from the job I had to do. I was irritated enough when they added in a beam ammo system in metroid prime two.

Now, as a woman I have a natural interest in this issue, and I want females in the game. And since females amongst most animals are just as violent, or capable of violence, as the males I see no reason to differentiate between how male and female populate the game. Enemies and civilians should all be a fairly equal mix of male and females IMO.

Please skip any sexist bullshit about females tending the children or being victims to be saved by Turner etc.

Then there is the issue of identification for women playing the game, I want very much to be able to play a female protagonist, or at least fight female enemies.

The obvious solution, which worked fine in Lugaru, would have been to use an androgynous model(s) that look more animal than human. But the models made so far makes that solution impossible, they look like human well trained males, which can't be imagined into females. So unless the models are remade to look more androgynous any serious effort to include females require female models.

Obviously, a female model should not be created by adding breasts or the like. But by making it slightly slimmer and smaller, a little bit softer lines in the sillouhette, and create animations that are correctly corresponding to female movement.

To the ones saying women should not be included in a cruel fighting game, or immediately jump to sexual associations and the like: !!! Error. Your internal OS is outdated and not compatible with this discussion, please update your brain to version 1.9.6.0 or later.!!!

Aha, not to mention that women know a lot of things about cruelty!
Own experience here.

For reals.

Doesn't seem too tricky to me to tweak the existing model, either. A little narrower in the waist, a little more hips and you're done, pretty much like the Lugaru rabbit. Maybe something around the eyes or muzzle. I know a lot of people are stoked for some fat and thin types, too.

Everything that expands the reality of the world will make it more immersive to play-- and easier and more interesting for modders. Having a good variety of body types, language options and level objectives will make a lot of stories possible.
