When will Lugaru 2 FINALLY be released?

Post by mastering » Wed Mar 21, 2007 7:50 pm

Man, I can't wait to see it.... It's been more then 4 years this game is being made... And no one knows when it's gonna be released... I have a prognostic for the release date, however: summer of 2009. It has an 83% chance of success. The other 17% means that it will be released earlier.

I am in school and have been working on some side projects; I will probably not have much time to put into L2 until the summer.

I think david deserves a break anyways. Once it's summer though, can we get another video of lugaru 2 in action or another blog entry?

Jeff, David, Sectaurs, Ninjas or somebody, should just go into Lugaru 2 every once in a while and take a screen shot.

It doesn't even have to be after David programs in something new, we just need to see more of what's there.
Anything! It's all good!

I wonder why every developer keeps his prototypes to him/herself. The Phoenix UI app available to us isn't really that interesting. :P

If you open prototypes to the public, they complain, request support and improvements, measure the final product by comparison to the prototypes, expect prototype features that probably won't make it into the final game, think they know what the final game will be like and eventually turn away from the title... These are some problems that make it easier not to release anything playable that isn't like the final product.

Yes, that is what would happen if you released prototypes to the pubic… Wait, that's not right.

I don't know why people would do that though, given the fact they know it's a prototype.

Look at how many threads there are about Soul of Steel and that is not even on the level of an official prototype.

Giving you an example of how prototypes require support?

I wonder how many e-mails, PMs, and IMs David and co. get asking "when will it come out; When will it be done; Are you working on it; Why is it taking so long?" I bet it's a lot. We don't mean to pester and annoy; we're just like curious, anxious kids waiting for Santa Claus to bring us a new toy. And we got a few peeks into the workshop. :)

There are unfinished, unpolished things you can release to the public though. You just have to use the right labels. Proof-of-Concept is a label that does the job. Prototype doesn't. It's psychology. If you release something as a PoC, people are more forgiving. For no reason, of course. Prototypes are on the same level.
It's the same with alpha and beta releases. I've played some alphas that were on the exact same level as the betas and the final release. People silently accepted the alpha, complained furiously about the beta issues and played the final release without getting mad about what they hated in the beta. It's just crazy. The power of labels.

There is a lot of extra work involved in preparing a game (or even a prototype), for public release. I hear that this was a significant factor in E3's recent demise; preparing demos for the press wasted a lot of time and effort that could have been put into actually finishing the game itself.

There's the problem, preparing something matters too much, the only things that are in my interests are the various testing, prototype and demonstration apps you make those GIFs with, that's really all I need in a "Prototype". We love the GIFs, so more things like that Phoenix UI app are my idea of prototypes.

P.S: Please don't release any of these apps. I hate changing people's minds and/or persuading people. :P
