Wolfire Development Blog - Part 3!

Post by David » Wed Jul 11, 2007 2:15 am

I decided to take a break from working on editors to work on the graphics in the Phoenix Engine some more. Today I added iterative parallax mapping to the ground to add even more depth to the texture. Check out the latest blog entry here for screenshots!

Looking good! Will there be any indentations left on the ground from feet etc? Or muddy footprints after crossing a stream?

Kudos on the update,

-James

Suddenly I get the feeling my computer won't be able to take that kind of graphical punishment X3 I should seriously upgrade my whole system at some point.

On another note, the second screenshot (the muddy ground) looks excellent. It'd be perfect for a swamp type setting *remembering how I suggested quicksand traps in the swamps a while back ^_^*

You'll be surprised at how much 1.4 Ghz can do… How much do you have?

Hey, nice! =)

Even though the first screenshot gives me the the Oblivion-feel (Not edgy enough, impo. And it ALWAYS look wet =P), it looks great on the mud.

2.8GHz, but don't forget it's not so much the speed itself that determines a processor's power. AMD processors, while generally slower than Pentium (Highest I've seen is 2.4, and they're quite expensive) still manage to deliver more power.

You can come a long way with that. Depends on the rest of the setup. And the software part, too <.<

Well, yeah, I do suppose I'm getting the most out of my 1.4 Ghz with 1GB of RAM. :P

Not to mention G4s are pretty good, too.

Well I only have a gig of RAM, and I had to switch back to my older 128MB Graphics card since my system was too underpowered to run the 512MB beauty (which unfortunately is AGP, take note), and STOP errored at an alarming rate. Once I get a new towercase, and maybe get a new motherboard and processor too (although I doubt there are any new motherboards these days which would have AGP slots), I can fit my awesome 600W power supply into the system and that should be me upgraded ^^

I think David has said he plans to make Lugaru 2 scalable, so you shouldn't need to worry.

…I thought 128MB was the highest available graphics card?

I've never even heard of such an overpowered graphics card!

Actually they're getting much more powerful, I've seen 768 MB graphics cards. But they're all PCI-Express. I doubted the existence of a 512MB AGP card until eventually I managed to get my hands on one.
