Martial Arts Video References for Overgrowth

Post by Endoperez » Sun Jan 11, 2009 2:16 pm

EDIT: embedded Youtube videos

Overgrowth will, hopefully, have awesome combat animations. To help them become even more awesome, I thought it'd be nice to have a thread dedicated to collecting martial arts videos. Videos spesifically about counter-moves against spesific weapons would, of course, be ideal. These aren't always easy to find.

I can't enforce any personal rules in this thread, but I'd like to make it first and foremost a reference for things that can be used in Overgrowth. Because of this, I ask that others that contribute to this thread follow these guidelines:

1) Give a description of the video. Unarmed or armed? What weapon(s)? Short clip or a longer one? Martial art style and/or point of origin can also be mentioned.

2) Don't post videos in which you can't tell what happens. Low-quality video won't be of any use if you can't tell how that sword was parried.

3) Don't post videos just because you like them. I'm sure there's a thread for cool videos in here, and that's the proper place for them. Even if you see a really cool-looking martial arts video, if it's not useful for Overgrowth, this isn't the place for it. So no magic, firebending or gun-kata.

4) It doesn't have to be real, but don't post anime, cartoon, wire-fu or action movie fights unless they're good and have enough basis on realism to work in Overgrowth. That means over-the-top jumping is in, but swords bigger than small boats are out.

5) If there's lots of discussion and it threatens to take too much space (say, a full page's worth), please move the discussion elsewhere and post more videos. Even discussions about the videos previously posted. This is supposed to be a collection of references, and it won't be if there's too much talk and too few videos.

6) Try to find videos about weapons similar to the ones that have been confirmed to be in the game.

Here's a start:

Sabre against staff, 35 s.
Both weapons used to attack and parry, and sabre used to counter staff in several ways, including: thurst to groin, kick to groin/stomach, slash across throat or towards face. They use a style of tai chi (chinese). I once saw some of these in person, and the slicing motion the curved blade makes along your neck is very distracting.

Straight sword against spear and/or sword, 5.07 min.
You can skip the solo form in the beginning, but at about 3.00 the video starts demonstrating applications. Most of the applications are against two opponents using either swords or a sword and a spear. It's all based on a single Chinese solo form, the same that's done in the beginning.

Two langes messer against each other, 2.10 min.
This is a long dagger or a very short sword, with relatively wide blade. Shows several different attack-and-counter pairs, each from few different angles. Includes one disarm near 1.40. Germany.

Two langes messer against each other, 4.39 with German commentary.
One of them attacks, others parries, and the attacker shows how he would have continued to attack.

Two longswords (two-handed sword) against each other, 3.10 min.
German text between each attack/counter pair that describes the intention if you know German. It starts with an attack, which is then parried, then an attack made at different angle to make parrying harder, then a counter-attack, then how the counter-attack is parried, etc etc. At least some parts would also work for all two-handed swords, including katanas.

Pollaxe vs pollaxe, 5.45 min.
Pollaxe is a polearm with cutting blade and spikes for thrusting and hooking. Perhaps half of the length comes from still images and text between the action. About half-way in, it has several nice sequences where an attack is countered, the counterattack is countered, and the counter's counter is countered.

Guan dao solo form, 2.46 min.
Guan dao is a polearm, also known as kwan dao, pudao and dadao. I didn't find any videos with two-person forms or applications, but this looks like it would work for the two polearms we've seen. Parts of the form could work for different attacks: slashes, thrusts, hits with the handle, kicks.

There are few clips from some animations I want to post, but I'm having trouble finding videos with high graphical quality.

edit: don't mind me, I'm just checking if anyone else ever checks this thread...

Sounds like a good idea.

It would be neat if there were different disarms according to the direction you pressed.

This might be an example of a crouch-forward disarm

Bare hand against Katana.
Now, a Katana isn't officially in, but the cat was wielding one in the blog.

EDIT: Fixed

.... the cat was holding a rapier.... or a type of one. Katanas have a slightly longer handle, a more curved blade and don't taper as much at the tip. if you look at this picture:http://www.samurai-swords-for-sale.com/ ... katana.jpg, and this one: http://www.swordsofmight.com/ProductIma ... pier_M.jpg you'll see a difference between the cutting weapon and and stabbing weapon, like a more flat tip and a sharper edge. Although, in the picture (http://blog.wolfire.com/2008/10/greed/), the blade is pretty short.... but it looks more like the rapier than the katana.

I have no idea why I just did that...

Looks like your right, but all I could remember at the time was the tiny curve in the blade, so I thought it's either a scimitar or a katana.

Here are some dagger disarms, the second one would be cool if you could wield double daggers.

Need. Moar. Aikido.
And the real thing. Not the brutal slap-bang-crush stuff that you first find when googling it that's oh so near to judo.

Bare hand against Katana.
The link to the video doesn't work for me.
http://blog.wolfire.com/2005/09/more-weapons/ <- the third-to-last weapon in there looks a lot like katana. It might not be used two-handed, though.

Few more videos:

Straight sword (jian) vs straight sword, 2.04 min.
From the show Avatar: the Last Airbender. Unfortunately the video is of rather poor quality. Includes lots of jumping, including a thrust-attack made from wall-jumping. Chinese. Avatar doesn't have many other weapon vs weapon fight scenes, and in most of those one or both combatants use dual swords.

fighting with bucklers and various weapons, 7.30 min but not much fighting
Kalaripayattu is an Indian fighting system. It's very old and looks very peculiar. The practitioners are unbelievably agile, and sometimes fight in strange, crouched posture. The fighting starts about half-way in, and becomes very fast in the end of the video. Weapons used: punching dagger, long staff, short stick (used like dagger), a curved club, a heavy wooden club, spear, sword and buckler, urumi (whip-sword).

Saber and guan dao, 0:55
Guan dao is the halberd/polearm with lots of names. I found an actual fight scene with it. It's not that great, but it's hard to search for something that has so many names.

Sabre solo form, combined parry+attack, 1.20

Straight sword parries and counters against sword and staff, 1.40
Differences between straight sword and sabre. The first video has a nice sabre-block that builds momentum for immediate counter-attack. The second video shows straight sword used to move the attacking weapon away, leaving the attacker open for various attacks or disarming.

That's all for tonight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JssUZBpf30I well I don't suppose that helps very much but it would be interesting to see someone use a dagger in the same hand as they've got their shield. like the guy fighting with the scottish broadsword in this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsPJEc50sgY&NR=1 this might help a little bit for making animations but idk.

those are all longsword techniques, you can play it without sound.

and that's about all for right now, I wanted to post some african martial arts, but couldn't find any good videos.

Pollaxe 1 vs 1, 2:31
Two polearms. Lots of parrying, little grappling when one of them graps the other's weapon. The fight ends when one combatant loses his helmet.

Polearm vs polearm counter-moves and parries, 4:42
Pollaxe parries. The non-hookin moves probably work the same way for all polearms.

"Monk's spade" solo form, 1:01
One of the few real-life polearms that had blades in both ends of the weapon.

Unarmed against spear, 1:14
Full of counters and dodges, has few slowed-down sections where the unarmed guy jumps over the spear-thrust, and a cool-looking disarm.

1 vs 1 longsword parries, counters and disarms, 2:21
Techniques for two-handed swords. It had about 4 different disarms, not counting replays from different angles.

Olympic fencing from 1936 olympics, 1:56
Only shows the fencers' feet and shadows for the first 40 seconds, for some reason. The second half shows the swordplay. Looks very different from modern sport fencing.

I think there are now references for all weapons except the rapier and the parrying dagger. I don't have anything on those, and haven't found anything good either. Could someone look for something about them? Modern sport rapier won't do. At least the videos I looked at looked more like "tag with swords". No offense meant, the sport just has changed a lot. Could someone else look for some fencing/historical rapier videos? I know ARMA has made some good ones, but I couldn't find them.

That disarm was epic.

Several defensive Katana techniques. Each show two or three counter moves against one situation. Most involve grappling of some sort, some don't.
Defending forward thrust.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=qZPWPXSEbcw -- @50 seconds would be awesome in O.G. Maybe if you timed a grab right with the Katana. "And reap away!"

Defending against a cross slash.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_z72dPBlGKA ("there are plenty of options here, okay?")

Defending against a downward slash
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=y7dHA9vaYGY -Should be in O.G. Too awesome not to be. "Pull katana around your head, step back, and neatly sever"

Defending against multiple opponents
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=FCHdN6WA3qk "Punch. Stab. Slash. Slash. Slash."

Defending against a spear
/staff thrust.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5Qlk2xa-auc "so that's one less spearman to worry about."

It looks really good, but it doesn't look like it would be too useful in a real fight

It's wushu. Wushu is gymnastics with fighting, NOT free sparring. It's like a stage-fight, except both fighters are trained gymnasts in addition to being experts with their weapons.

It doesn't matter any way, because I didn't claim that you can disarm a spear like this. I posted it because in Overgrowth, spear or polearm evasions or disarm might look like this.

Stage fencing, 1:46
Describes how stage fencers have to dodge so that it's clear where the attack would have hit if they didn't dodge. It's a lot less confusing in action. There's a whole series of these videos if this looks useful. There's a short "fight" scene of 10 seconds or so in the end.
