Phoenix Engine 8-2-05 Terrain Progress

Post by David » Tue Aug 02, 2005 11:21 pm

I got texture layers working like in Lugaru, except with higher resolution textures. Here is snow terrain with two texture layers:

Also I am starting on the grass technology:

I honestly yelled out "Holy crap!" when I saw the grass. o.o
The snow terrain's pretty sexy too.

It's getting very interesting. When you have the grass tech. working, David, could you please post a screen or two with fps count? ;)

The screenshots don't really do the grass justice. Each piece of grass sways about in the wind. Each piece of grass looks like its own model. If you look straight down at the ground, it still looks perfect.

Wow! The grass looks amazing!
I have some questions:
Will the grass move and swat back when you walk over it?
Does the grass sway carelessly in the wind?
Can the grass be flattened when landed on after jumping, or when rolling?
Will there be lense flairs and all that jazz when looking at the sun?
Will there be weather effects like snow, rain, hail, and so on?
In the sandy levels and the snowy levels, will there be dynamic particles for the sand/snow when you walk over it, land on it, roll, and so on?

Probably.

The grass already sways in the wind.

Ideally, the grass will get flattened when you move over it, but that might not really be feasible to do. The technical reasons are beyond the scope of this thread, but David is still developing it.

There will be a good looking lens flare.

There will be all sorts of weather effects.

David and I were discussing possible implementations for powdery snow, where your feet actually sink into the ground. We have a couple of possible solutions - whether they are feasible or not remains to be seen.

The snow will also have awesome reflection effects and other features. It is going to be the best snow ever seen in a game - which is kind of weird considering there are snowboarding games and things.

Also, there is probably going to be wheat, reeds, and other grassy things, thanks to the grass engine.

I have not even started working on LOD or other optimizations, but it doesn't run THAT slow as it is now:

Okay, one thing: How do you expect people with a low end machine (like myself) to be able to run the game with blessed graghics like that?

I have another question, will ATI video cards be supported? I'd like all of the effects to function without having to buy another video card. :D

Someday, you will upgrade your computer, right? Lugaru 2 will be around when you do that. ;)

However, the graphics will be very customizable. You will be able to tone them down in the meantime.
