Re: "Bereft of good and evil are games without morality"?
I can't comment on games I haven't played :P I've played quite a few though, and most - when they're not utterly pretentious - are interesting for 5 minutes but then quickly forgotten. You could argue that these are baby-steps in the right direction, but I don't see much of a future in these games, ...

Re: Wordpress blog
Maybe you should start to link to other blogs from your blog. The start of the morality thread would have made a good link with a teaser quote and your own short oppinion on the topic and maybe you get traffic from a track back (not really sure how to set those up, though). As I understand it blogs...

Re: "Bereft of good and evil are games without morality"?
Re: Villains - this is perfectly subjective but I reckon the best villain is someone infallible, who you're almost tempted to look up to. Two good examples would be Tyler Durden and Sephiroth - both brilliant, both crazy, both in a close, "doppelgänger" relationship with the protagonist. ...

Unless "Balder" is pronounced "Balver" then yestokage wrote:I thought, Balder worked quite well, but maybe I got the pronunciation wrong.
Still, since "Salvar" is undeniably legal, the clear winner last round is Tokage

Re: Wordpress blog
What annoys me about Wordpress comments is that they need to be authorised, which takes the impetus out of discussion a just tad. I hadn't actually considered Disqus, but I think it's a great idea. Not entirely sure how though... I do everything in the browser, being a noob and all... Youtube videos...

Wordpress blog
Hi guys, you probably remember a little while ago I was asking about how to start a blog. Well, I've got it all set up and so on, along with a corresponding modDB account. It was suggested that I make a thread here to let people know when I've done a post, which seems like a good enough justificatio...

Re: "Bereft of good and evil are games without morality"?
You can often give alternatives to killing without greatly altering gameplay - contrary to what you might think, I *don't* actually like "educational" games, any more than I like "art" games. But I do think it would be good to have a more meaningful and a more educational side to...

Re: "Bereft of good and evil are games without morality"?
Good post Ren. Let's think about the "Cookie Jar" example mentioned: when you're very young, you take as many cookies as you can get away with, and your only fear is of being punished. Unless the punishment is extremely gruesome this isn't really going to dissuade you, and even if it *is* ...

Re: "Bereft of good and evil are games without morality"?
What could be done is an invisible morality or karma score, and a local crime rate score. Thieving could get you down to "suspicious" or so. But this is just the standard Bethesda mechanic for creating dynamic difficulty curves (future "heists" are harder). Since players like a ...

Re: "Bereft of good and evil are games without morality"?
If you lie and steal and kill, you lack morals. It's been done many times over. However, that should be different from the actual effects your actions have on the world? Whenever I play Fallout or Oblivion kleptomania sets in big-time, but I don't think it's because I know I won't be arrested and p...

Re: "Bereft of good and evil are games without morality"?
"Ethics", for the Ancient Greek, governed all aspects of life: even ridiculous things like "should I wear a red hat" are part of ethics. People talk more about ethics when it comes to things like Free Trade Coffee, and morality when it comes to deception or murder. "Morality...

"bereft of choices, are games without morality?"
Nah - you go into ethics in films and books. Out of curiosity - who here knows the difference between "morality" and "ethics"? I'll give you a hint: one has strong Christian overtones.
