Have you tried executing it from the terminal?
Type (I think) ./[overgrowth file name here]
if that doesn't work try #./[Overgrowth file name here]
if that doesn't work try typing sudo -i and entering your password if it asks for it and then try the above two.

I actually like these ideas apart from porcupines and mounts and bears. In other words I think ferrets and boars would probably add to the game. I'm not holding my breath for them to be added though. The game already has enough races as it is.

Delete the 'Movement Speed' parameter, then create a new text parameter, rename it to 'Movement Speed' and you can type in any value you like.

It would be helpful if you gave us some system specs. Go into run or the search bar (if you're using windows) and type "dxdiag" and run the icon with the x on it that should appear. Copy the info from there and post it to us. Make sure you include the graphics card details in the 'display'...
