I always understood the repairing thing to be that eventually you'd get injured in ways similar to how enemies do (losing legs, arms, etc...), but by cannibalizing their unharmed parts (shoot them in the head, then take their functioning legs once they're dead), you can 'heal' youself. Yeah, it would be great it he picked it back up at some point. That game had a hell of a lot of potential.

Off the top of my head, the biggest thing I'd suggest would be to allow for weapon sights in third person mode (which you can switch to with "tab"), like the way that Oni uses guns.
