Also, it's very difficult to locate a man who is at home in that part of the world when the US military wouldn't have the same level of contacts there. It's happened plenty of other times in history. Such as Serbian war criminals taking refuge in Croatia and not being found for years (see Ante Gotovina), and also to a more extreme degree Hiroo Onoda.
You can say it's not on the same scale, but when someone has that level of power and doesn't want to be found...what can you do?

wow, that Hiroo Onoda story is crazy! I've seen pics of the jungle in the Philipines, and I guess if you were going to hide and not hear news from the outside world, that'd be a good place.
I heard this morning on NPR that someone who knew him said Bin Laden spent the last 5 years basically in one room.
I know, who's to say if that's true, right? But having spent a day or *ahem* two without leaving the keyboard except to eat, pee, and clean the catbox, well...
...I know it's unlikely given his personality, but what if he's been heavy into WoW this entire time
