Red Vs. Blue

RvB is a popular webseries based off of the Halo universe, produced by Rooster Teeth. I wouldn't be surprised if most people here knew about it already, but I'm sure there are a few who don't.

A brief description: Red Vs. Blue starts off as a pure comedy chronicling the adventurous conflicts of the Red and Blue squads within Blood Gulch. Being relatively old, these first few seasons were filmed using Halo 1. As time went on, the generic characters and plots took a turn towards being more developed, with unique and lovable characters emerging to form an unlikely band of heroes- well, not really. They mainly just want to kill each other and be lazy. The team also used Halo 2 and Halo 3 as mediums for filming after they came out. Though most of their videos are really just in-game recordings that have voice-overs added to them, they are increasingly edited and shopped as the series progresses, and by season 8, there are even full-fledged animated sequences (most notably, 3 huge animated fight scenes)

There's 8 full seasons up on the Red vs Blue site. Each season has about 20 mainstream videos, with most seasons having special videos or PSAs of some sort. Seasons 1-5 are untitled and transition into the more serious, plot-heavy seasons- 6, 7, 8, entitled Reconstruction, Recreation, and Revelation respectively. Season 9 is set to debut this summer.

NOTE: Some people are tempted to go straight into the later seasons because they think that the earlier seasons are inferior or aren't important. If you do this, you're dumb. Start from the first season. Even the first few episodes are diamonds in the rough, despite their obvious issues, but they're pretty good for a start. You'll also get to see the development of the series in general and each individual character if you watch it chronologically.

I started watching RvB around the 17th episode or so. My favorite seasons by far are 1-3, though some of their new stuff is very interesting, but in a very different way.

They're not identical, their cover is different. Image

Once RvB was at it's 90 or so'th episode of the first season, I decided to go back and watch it all in order, 100 episodes ater, I assumed that would be all there was too it, but then they made 7 more seasons I now have to watch! Plus, by the time those ones are out of the way, the new one'll probably be finished, so I'll have t watch that one too!

Hm, I find the humour a bit... I dunno, shallow? Caustic?

Although I probably shouldn't complain since I've watched the entire series. Except for the new stuff, anyway.

That one Tex-beats-the-crap-out-of-the-entire-cast episode was pretty cool.

Well, it is geared towards a gamer audience, namely teens and young adults. You're not likely to find much subtle humor or innuendos in there.

There's a few animated sequences in there, but only in the 8th season. Some of the older fights are still really cool to watch- it's interesting how they improvised during the earlier seasons to make it seem legit. Heck, back during the first seasons, they had to record it from a player perspective, which is why there are those black bars on the earlier episodes- they're hiding the HUD. You can still see the crosshairs of the cameraman, and whenever the camera is pointed at someone, the reticule turns red.

The series has come a long ways since then in terms of polish and ambition. It's really quite good for a once limited web-series- even Bungie has recognized the awesomeness of RvB by including an RvB DVD with the Limited Edition of Halo 3 :P

True, although shallow doesn't necessarily mean bad. I find the original Beavis And Butthead series hilarious, and it's QUITE shallow...but with witty undertones. It's like an intelligent form of dumb.

Having said that, I'm not too big a fan of Red Vs. Blue. That one with your one kicking the shit out of everyone is fun, though.

I liked the series less as it got more developed. It just kind of lost its magic. That whole original idea of two teams, doing nothing, in a tactically irrelevant box canyon, is just so dry and ironic that the idea of it made me laugh the first time I saw it. I love the whole series, but the first couple seasons will always be my favorites. I don't really like the animation being added, it just turns it into any other CG cartoon. In the beginning it was cool because it was pure machinima, with perhaps a shop here and there, and the shops were so cheesy they were hilarious.

I didn't really like the first series as much, although I won't deny it is really good.

Oh and by the way Ragdollmaster, you forgot to mention that RvB is also available on DVD in box sets, and on the Xbox live Marketplace! :P

Harhar.

Slightly awkward autotuning aside, this is a pretty nice listen. Note: The video has potential spoilers if you haven't seen the whole series, so you may want to just listen to the audio.

There's a few other original songs made by the creators of RvB which you can find on that channel.

This one is notable as well.

Well, season 9 launched last week. Episode 1 isn't too exciting, but it sets the stage nicely. Episode 2 is totally different- it seems they're going for alternating episodes between Church and the Freelancers' past. Episode 2 is entirely animated and contains a huge fight scene which isn't even finished by the end. If you're the kind of gentlemen that likes Red Vs. Blue for its fight scenes and not the story, you may want to watch this. Pretty awesome.

Red vs. Blue isn't bad for a laugh or two, but I enjoy their Fails of the Weak more.

Quite a bit of violence in the most recent episode.
