PS3 Resistance 3 or Warhammer 40k: Space Marine?
PS3 Resistance 3 or Warhammer 40k: Space Marine?
I've been debating trying to figure out which one of these two games I want to buy. According to the critics reviews Resistance 3 seems to be the all around better game, but it's also a FPS which makes it seem possibly a bit unoriginal. Warhammer 40K looks really fun hasn't gotten as good reviews. What's your guys' opinions. Which one should I get?
Re: PS3 Resistance 3 or Warhammer 40k: Space Marine?
I've only played Space Marine, and I don't have a PS3, so what I could recommend should be pretty obvious.

Why play Space Marine when you could just play the game that it copied 90% of its gameplay aspects from?

i got a demo of space marine, it's pretty lame actually.
if you have PS3 i don't see why you wouldn't just demo it before considering it, they have a demo for almost every game that comes out.
you should get demon's souls.

What game would that be? It seems pretty fresh to me.Renegade_Turner wrote:Why play Space Marine when you could just play the game that it copied 90% of its gameplay aspects from?
Yes. I don't have a PS3, but this would be one of the few reasons for me to get one.underthedeep wrote:you should get demon's souls.

The Gears Of War series. I must be crazy because the movement system, art style and gameplay all seem nearly identical to me. Looks like it could be fun though.
Also, it's funny reading all the Warhammer nerds that go apeshit over game news articles at the slightest implication that Space Marine might be in the slightest way derivative of Gears Of War, which it very clearly is, as the gameplay and art style are almost a carbon copy of GOW's. "Oh you clearly haven't researched the 40K universe." No, nor do I want to, I just have eyes and common sense.
Relevant.

I can definitely appreciate that 40K has been around for way longer, but the similarities are there and plain as day. Still I don't think we should delve too deeply into this, as I feel we may be kicking an internet beehive...

If you're looking for solid shooters, there are other titles I'd recommend before Resistance- not because it's a bad series, it's actually very enjoyable in terms of gameplay mechanics and has a fairly unique universe- but because the other games within that genre available on the platform are utterly spectacular. Killzone, Uncharted, MGS4, SOCOM4, etc etc. Assuming you have played through some of those titles already, Resistance is a solid buy, but I haven't played WH40K or even seen any screenshots, trailers, et al, so I can't really compare the two.

Oh yeah, Warhammer 40K has been around way longer, but I'm not sure "I was here first" makes sense in this conversation since it's about the two video games rather than the two concepts.
Re: PS3 Resistance 3 or Warhammer 40k: Space Marine?
No, I agree with you. Although I haven't played Gears of War 2, and never got around to finishing the first one, I do see the similarities myself. Gears of War (the first one) came out quite a while ago, and I haven't actually played any games like it until now with Space Marine, so it did feel quite fresh in comparison with the shooters I've been playing since.Renegade_Turner wrote:The Gears Of War series. But now that you do mention it, yes, there is a striking resemblance.

Considering how Resistance 3 wasn't as amazing as Resistance 2 (my own opinion considering how there were some less huge battles, although this wasn't surprising considering how you're just one person sneaking across the country) I might say Space Marine.
If you like GoW, you're going to like Space Marine, almost identical gameplay mechanics, not gonna lie.

They'e both pretty even in quality. That is to say, average and unremarkable.
Resistance 3 has some really nifty weapons and cool scripted sequences.
Space Marine has solid and well-balanced gameplay.
Personally, I would go with Resistance. It makes a greater effort in terms of variety and pacing. With Space Marine you can play any 20 minutes of the game and you will have basically seen everything it has to offer. And the final boss is literally just a quicktime event.

Hmm, I haven't played either. I would recommend getting this list:
Minecraft
Overgrowth
The Ultimate Doom, off Ebay.
This way, you get 3 amazing games for the price of one cool/mediocre console game! Efficiency FTW!
But I would personally buy Resistance 3 before Space Marine. And yeah, Space Marine is a pretty similar game to GoW. I hate that people go, "Well, WH was around first." A see issues in the only arguments for Space Marine:
<> Warhammer wasn't Space Marine at first. I may not know much about the universe or origins, but I do know that using a whole series origin as the origin for a large 'spin off' is inaccurate.
<> Although Space Marine was around first, guess which one of these two was a third person shooter first? One was a series first, while the other was a game first. The dispute is over the game, not the series or lore, so I'm sick of hearing that the lore of Space Marine came first.
<> To a degree, fuck them both. The Marines came first, complete with leather necks, lots of badassery, and heavy armor. So piss off and leave my Corps alone.
But GoW is something that I would rather play than Space Marine just because it is cooler to me and I would have more fun with it because I'm unentertained by hack and slash games. Too dull; the combat feels stale and inactive to me after 10 minutes. Kind of like Runescape's combat, or WoW: Click and sit.

I dont think overgrowth should be in that list considering its not in a very playable state. Its still in the alpha stages.
Minecraft while fun is also still in beta. I keep getting the feeling that notch is going to somehow ruin the game when the final product is released because he will concentrate too much on trying to make his game into an ACTUAL game ... you know ... with goals and stuff.
The problem being that everyone who plays minecraft plays it for its creative quality. If there was a way to win the game, or worse, lose the game the game loses some of its original appeal found in the beta.
Re: PS3 Resistance 3 or Warhammer 40k: Space Marine?
Well, it appears atleast Resistance 3 got some good credit from Mr. Croshaw.
