You haven't really taught any lesson there, MacWiggy. The sites you posted are actually pretty much not the "internet street". Especially not MySpace. MySpace is one of the worst-coded public humiliation and pornstar blogging sites ever.

If you're setting up some ad page with nifty blinky-blinky, Flash is the way to go. If you want to put up pics and text to tell about personal stuff, Flash is out of the discussion.

I'm actually surprised not seeing YouTube or video.google.com in your list. But even if you would have mentioned those, they are also nothing that I'd associate with "internet street cred". That's an opinion though, I'm aware of the fact that others would.

The problem with Flash is that the plugin is proprietary software. The way it has been implemented on Linux is really bad.

Besides, allowing Flash is a big security risk since it's a possibility to fork-bomb.

I could give you a link that would make your operating system not respond anymore if you clicked on it. This is possible because Flash can spawn new processes. Far from internet street cred, if you ask me :)

Please don't call people 'moron' in here. Arguing over the internet is like taking part at the Paralympics: Even if you win, you're still retarded.

I have to agree with Jeff here. Flash is primarily for posers who think bright colors and animation make up for bad design and no content. Most of those sites you mention are aimed at teenagers. If you want "street cred" among the junior high set, by all means use Flash.

I think Flash can do some cool things when used properly. At the end of the day, it's all about using the right tool for the job.

Mac: I don't think you really understand. Pros likes us spend twice as much on one piece of software as you do on your entire rig. Not that it's a big deal to have a badass computer since working on it is what we do for a living.

Exactly the reason I don't use flash: Too flashy.

Anyway, I'm not going for that kind of look. I want something simple, and the reason I'm doing this whole thing is to familiarize myself with browser code/scripting, so I can eventually move on to more complicated coding. (And possibly finally understanding javascript...)

MacWiggy wrote:People love Flash you moron! But then again, you probably can't run it on your aforementioned 99' G3 iMac.
Flash has it's purpose, but it is used way too much and in places it shouldn't be.
Flash navigation for one wouldn't be so annoying if most sites still had a Flash/HTML navigation option, I don't want to wait for a 1.5mb flash navigation bar with music to load just so I can look at the one page I want on a site.
Thank Mozilla for Flashblock ^_^

MacWiggy, did you just call me a moron? I am extremely close to banning you from wolfire.com, so if you want to stay here, quit acting like a three year old. Every single one of your posts continues to be fueled by pre-teen angst, chanelled into obnoxious, argumentative drivel, that frankly makes me feel like my IQ is dropping when I try to read it. Join the legions of other troubled 12 year olds on Xanga or LiveJournal (since you seem to already have MySpace), throw some crappy flash onto it, and use that as your outlet for your parent's negligence instead. I will personally give you four ePropz to make you feel better and set you on your way to massive internet street cred.

And no, having a crappy flash navigation scheme does not give you any internet street cred. Having a valid XHTML/CSS website without any flash, java, shockwave, or other plugins (except where absolutely necessary) gives you internet street cred. I can't believe you used MySpace as the ultimate, authoritative website. Actually I can, and that is very unfortunate.

heh heh heh, ha ha ha ha! Holy crap this thread is hilarious guys!

Anyways, I don't get the deal with flash and all. You know, sites that have flash inside them for navigational purposes are okay. For instance that Lugaru fan page, I dunno what your guys' deal with flash is, but that was a pretty cool site. It trasitioned pictures to zoom way faster than an html can, and it had that sweet one song Lugaru music player. Now I wouldn't call that street cred, but it's cool for doing things like personel sites. Also, flash games are fun (sometimes), and flash movies are interactive and can be compressed better than Windows Media Player (At least I think so...).

But then there's this just horrible, horrible use for flash. Where it doesn't just lose a site's 'street cred' it makes them un-navigational. Particularly, when a site decides to use something like a wmv ported to flash, when what they really should be using is just plain old quicktime. For instance, Gamespot's uservideos are shown using the flash videoplayer and even after they load, they stop half way through and you can never finish the end of them. It freaken pisses me off, I don't know what the hell is going when it does that. And then there's just the semi-annoying players that Youtube has that make it impossibly slow to stream and download, and even worse when you are trying to navigate to a certain spot during the movie you're watching. I agree with Ninjas, flash can be good when used properly, but it can also end up being just plain wrong.
God I hate those flash video players...
(Gt weekly has a pretty interesting flash player though, it's kinda like the IMG podcast because it has little chapters while the video is playing, each with it's own little picture. Except whenever they mention something like an interview, you can actually click the picture and view the entire video; it pops you back to the 'news report' when it's done. It's pretty cool but still, it has that darn bug that glitches out and stops playing for you during the video. Sometimes it still screws up even after you reload the darn page, and I have no idea how to fix it)

Oh wait, that had nothing to do with what Staffshock would use flash for... Aah well, I think he knows that flash won't look any good on his website since the general consensus is that it's bad for that sort of thing. Oh! And as for those page tabs lighting up, I think the only problem is that for some reason, Firefox (it may happen with all browsers) won't load the entire page so you have to hold your mouse over the picture for a couple seconds before it gets properly out-lined (well I guess on default settings, pages load really fast on firefox beacuse of this)

That above me, folks, is the best rant in the history of the wolfire boards.

And I think everyone here agrees about MacWiggy, as well.

Back on topic: I've been taking suggestions from this forum and the marathon pfhorums, and they've both told me to shrink down the buttons, so they're going down.

By the way, NO FLASH! The reason I didn't use it was to get a good web development experience and familiarize myself with browser scripting so I can move on to programming language. (I think I said this in my other post.)

By the way, people, please vote. I know the buttons are really big, and probably take up half the screen on some people's monitors, but scroll down, there's some content there.

EDIT: I'm a preteen, too... o_O

Sorry, Freewebs is blocked from the Chinese network. Officials couldn't be reached for comments.

...but did you just say the marathon pfhorums? Whoever came up with that is a genius.

Haha yeah, the best parody of marathon as far as I'm concerned.

If I didn't step in, you could go for days just talking about how much I suck.
"He's a preteen!" "Yeah!" "He started a flamewar!" "Yeah!" "He's a witch!"
If you haven't noticed, I've been trying to give you suggestions.

Me: "All I'm sayng is people like flash."
Jeff:"Every single one of your posts continues to be fueled by pre-teen angst, chanelled into obnoxious, argumentative drivel."

Go ahead, block me. How many other people have you kicked out for challenging your ideas?

:? I don't believe any of us have taken shots at you like that except for Jeff who I believe you called a moron. Maybe you haven't noticed but calling forum Administrators morons is not usualy the greatest idea.

Would that be challenging there ideas of acceptable behavior?

It is not your "ideas" that are pissing everyone off, so much as your violation of many forum rules.

Namely:
1. Please do not post spam, random comments.

2. Don't post messages specifically for other forum members, that's what private messages are for.

3. The edit button has a use. Use it. If You want to add something to a previous post, Edit It!

5. Please keep the conversation above 2nd grade level; basic spelling and grammar are appreciated

6. Be polite. Do not post anything defiling, e.g. swears, ethnic slurs, etc.
Keep in mind that there are children here.

8. No Mac vs PC debates, they just make people mad and split the community.
If you dont start following the rules, then you will be banned. It is pretty simple.

Go to your room, young man! You can come out when you want to act like an adult.

For the record, you are the first person that has been banned. I will try to refrain from making jokes about your charisma given the ratio of banned to unbanned accounts, but seriously, the problem is on your end, not how the forums are moderated.

Email me when you feel like you're ready to come back. (Yes, of course I am emailing this to him.)
