Prince Of Tennis

Anyone heard of this anime? My girlfriend loved it, so I said I'd try it myself even though I thought I'd probably hate it, because before I watched it, I never liked any anime I'd seen, except pokemon when I was a little boy. :P

It's an anime, obviously about tennis, about this young tennis player named Ryoma Echizen who has just come over from America to Japan and joined a school named Seigaku, or Seishun Gakuen. Although he's a freshman, he becomes determined to break the school tennis team and people begin to take notice of him.

Before you write it off, believe me, I thought it was going to be terrible too. It's a great anime.

However DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT watch the English dub of it. Watch the episodes with the subtitles on YouTube (there'll all there, all 178 of them) instead.

The English dub has terrible voice acting. It's disgusting. However, the Japanese voice actors are all superb somehow. They put the perfects tones where needed, when they're being serious, sad, adding some humour to it.

Another note, Prince Of Tennis has some moments which are hilarious. There are some special episodes where the writers of the show no doubt wanted to just have a bit of fun and come up with the stupidest stuff they could think of.

However, Prince Of Tennis has a perfect blend of action, drama, comedy and pretty much everything else. I can't find any problems with it. Now, the tennis players in it are obviously going to be brilliant, and more so as the cartoon progresses.

Each character has their own techniques which they've perfected, and each character also has his own unique personality. That's one major key point of the show that makes it so appealing. There are so many characters who come up many times, and each character has a layered personality that sets them apart from the others.

You'll see this all if you watch it. Obviously, you'd want to start from the beginning, so if you feel interested...

Do a search on YouTube for "Prince Of Tennis 01", which'll give you search results containing the segments of the first episode.

The episodes are divided into either two or three segments, due to the video length limit or something.

And even if you don't like it, what harm? Just watch one part, if you don't fancy it, fine.

Also, if you're not a tennis fan, don't mind about that. I wasn't a tennis fan when I started watching it. I am now that I have watched it. This cartoon made me start playing tennis.

Have fun.

Prince of Tennis is supposed to be one of the top-level series.
Saw an episode when I was in Japan, and even though I had no idea what the hell was happening (only understood 50-70% of the conversations; though, naturally, no idea as to the plot) I was still impressed.

Yeah. Even watching it without knowing what's being said would be pretty okay, because the matches are so intense anyway, and you know the general jist of what the people are thinking most of the time by the tone of their voice. That's something it does very well.

Haxors beware!

There's a dangerous hacker floating around the web be the name of bitchchecker, so guard your ip carefully... an example of his fine work

I might've seen him around the forums.... or maybe it's just the hundreds of little haxors acting exactly like him... so hard to tell...

It gets much better as it goes on. Trust me. They get many more techniques and start playing much more difficult opponents (obviously). In the episodes at the moment, the allstar Japanese team from the Kantou region the Seigaku school is in is playing against this American team. It's intense stuff.

That's what I saw in Japan - they were introducing the American team.

English dubs in general suck, FYI.

That's because English actors treat anime like cartoons for kids, whereas Japanese ones treat it like art, an entertainment form for the masses and not just the kiddies.

Our voice acting industry isn't developed much, either; and I wouldn't blame the bad acting on the actors so much as on the producers - they're the ones not willing to dish out funding for decent voice acting, and yet also the ones who believe it's necessary to boost sales. Gods.
They also tend to screw up the translations... I trust fansub groups more than I do companies.
