I should get into this stuff, I've really been wanting to but I'm broke. Will be employed soon! Less than 6 months WHOO! Actually, I'm a bit terrified

Boot camp's gonna suck so bad

So, if a guy wanted to get into some sick programming but still wants to be able to play Overgrowth and a few other games casually... Should he get into this?
I'd probably use a Linux for programming and keep some less-than-sweet PC on the side for games, once I'd actually saved up enough money for that sort of spendiness.
On a side note, I'm going to start looking into cross-platform developing for my game. Just for you, underthedeep! I'm using SFML, so I'm sure there are going to be a good number of conflicts with that. Anyone know a few good resources on using it on a Linux system?

The same way we do in every thread.
- #1: Actual Topic.
#2: Another Topic that reminds of Actual Topic.
#3: Topic regarding Actual Topic, comment on Another Topic.
#4: Several comments on Another Topic.
#5: A third topic, regarding Another Topic, may also be influenced by Actual Topic.
- Repeat steps 3-5 an arbitrary amount of times -
#7: Question regarding the evolvements of the Topics.
#8: Explanation of the evolvements of Topics.
- Repeat steps 2-8 until thread dies -

and that's why this is my favorite forum.

Bravo, sir, a splendid summary.
So underthedeep, have you made any decisions yet?

Quick question, I know next to nothing about computers and how to build them but I was thinking about learning at some point soon and building myself a decent PC. What does the motherboard actually affect when building a PC? And what would class a motherboard as "good"? I was always under the impression that the performance of a PC was only affected by the more major components (CPU, GPU and RAM)

You just need a motherboard that is compatible with all the components you're sticking to it. If you wish to use USB3.0 slots, that goes directly on the motherboard and you need one that has compatibility for it (that is, actual slots). Except for that, I don't know what differences that specifies certain motherboards.
I built my computer from parts, and I still don't know whether my motherboard is any good or not (I bought a complete-pack of parts).

Definitely AMD, definitely a PC. Most likely one of the two first builds with my own funk on it. I do love my Mac, but I don't feel like spending 2.5k on a Mac Pro when I can make a great similar machine for half of the money.

Always thought the only decently priced Apple products are the iPods and possibly iPads. iPhones are hundreds and the Mac series are fucking ridiculous! You'll be paying at least £1,000 for a lower mid range machine if you go Mac, whereas the same machine in PC form is about a quarter of that. You're only paying for the little apple on it, which if you ask me is another rip-off because it isn't even a whole apple, some inconsiderate bugger's gone and taken a bite out of it! All in all, although I own and love my iPod and would love to get an iPhone, I only do it because of their admittedly good customer service system and robust OS.
Don't know anything about the apple tv set top boxes so I can't comment, although they also seem to be prohibitively expensive.

Also Freshbite, thanks for that info, I recently came by a PC (Sister didn't take it with her when she moved away, mine now) and was wondering whether it would be worth throwing a few cheap components in it to make it mildly decent for gaming. I'll hook it up when I can be bothered and put the specs on here if there's anyone who's interested.
