I maded a mobile game

Some of you might already know that I'm currently studying game development. One of the projects we did was to make a game. It was originally for the Microsoft's Imagine Cup, but then our school got a deal with Nokia, and it changed into an in-school competition about making mobile games.

So I made a mobile game for Windows Phone OS.

It was a group effort. Althugh my group (4 in total) didn't get any prizes, we were pretty happy with our game, and would have liked to continue it. Unfortunately, school got in the way and now we're making other games already.

The reason I'm posting this here is that I made a slight screw-up with the release. We were planning to only release it after we had had the time develop it further, so we released it to a private audience first. When we found out we don't have time to continue on it right now, we had forgotten about this, and I only remembered to make the release public yesterday. This means that it was released nearly three weeks ago, but never appeared in the "newest games" list. :?

So yeah, here's a shameless little publicity stunt. If any of you happen to have a smartphone with Windows OS, please give it a try. We already know that it doesn't have a tutorial for aligning your jumps so your movement direction changes. That's one of the things we didn't have time to implement.

Think of a cute spider walking along a wall. You can't change its moving speed or direction. It's walking towards a hungry beast. When you tap the screen, the spider tries to jump to a different wall. If there's a wall close enough, he's now on the other wall. The walls are of varying sizes and curve in different directions, and there are enemies and traps.

Each level has three collectible items, one of which is the goal that ends the level. Getting more collectibles gives a better score.

Basically the levels are mini-puzzles where you have to time the jumps from one wall to the next, or do them in the correct order, and the character's movement speed acts as the time limit. The 10 levels are all simple because we ran out of time.

The spider looks adorable, I want one. Did you work in XNA for the development of this?
Is it possible that we will see an Android port?

Yeah, C# and XNA. I think that makes an Android port very unlikely, since AFAIK it's C++ and not XNA. Besides, the main coder is already busy in other projects.

Ah, I see. I thought this was a solo-project of yours.
Well, I know that Windows Phones and the Android are like complete opposites, Microsoft and Google aren't really the best of friends... Image

I don't know how the process for making a game for the Android works though, so I thought that maybe the code was reusable in some way for making an Android port. Perhaps that's not possible.

Some of the code is reusable, sure, especially the math stuff and the concepts. However, the interface stuff, playing music in the background, etc needs to be redone. It seems two of the school's games have been published in Android market though, so I guess there's people here who could help us get it done. Or if not that, then some later project.

Sweet looking Endo! I have an old Nokia flip phone, so I can't try this :(
I didn't know Android was C++... Anyone smell an Android port of Dominance in the future?
...
Maybe :)

Is there a meme-appopriate answer for that question?

BTW, I've ended up being associated with a blog that will be posting about stuff indie gamers are interested in.
I probably won't be writing for it myself, but if there's any topics you guys are interested in, I'd be glad to hear about it and forward them to others. The people in our school do all kinds of stuff from coding to design to management to art.

Hm... I'd be interested in seeing what you guys have to say on cross-platform ports. I've been wanting to get Dominance on Mac and Linux, but it was way over my head when I looked it up. If you guys could help us n00by devs out with it, I'd might forgive your meme-worthy, heretic grammar error.
