I've decided I want to take up pixel art.

Well.. I dunno what to say except I have started to work on pixel art. I don't really have much experience, except making my own Minecraft texture pack, a long time ago, but this is different, I want to learn without having anything to go off of. Self taught, if you will.
I'll be placing all the examples of my work in this 'ere thread!
This first one is 17x31. (wasn't using a set size.)

Kind of just working with my imagination at this point, as I hope you can tell its a broken blade. =P Any
constructive criticism is welcomed!

It is clearly a broken blade, but the handguard and blade are very close to each other in hue. A bit of contrast there could work well - perhaps the handguard would be colored bronze or gold?

More power to you, bro.
I've never done well with pixel art because when I work that close everything always looks like shit and I never get far enough to see the whole thing. >_>

Thanks. Yeah its always good to zoom out and take a look at things before you go and erase them because it most likely looks better then zoomed in. haha!

Another thing I just remembered:
try to use three tones of color: one color for neutral areas, one for highlights, one for areas in shadow. The "So you want to be a pixel artist" tutorial is a good read, but even if you don't want to bother, it has some great images you could look at. These ones give a great example of getting by with just a few colors, 3-4 tones per "object" or "area". I think they're from Chrono Trigger or some other classic JRPG.

I should go read that thread. I'm dreadful and slow at pixel art.
Go for it! Pixel art can be fun and a good challenge at times, since you have limited detail to construct with.
