Actually, Newton first named it. I mean, the great thing about it being a spectrum is that it is a "continuum of colors," but it was one of seven which he named in his original thesis: "Red, yellow, green, blue, and a violet purple; together with orange and indigo and an indefinite variety of intermediate gradations."
