If I play an FPS regularly I'll get fairly above-average at it and have more "wow awesome that totally looked like something a pro would do" moments than "jesus salmon christ i am literally retarded" moments. Strangely enough, sometimes I'll feel like I'm doing pretty bad at a game, leave it for a few weeks, come back, and do way better. There are some games where I don't mind doing bad and some where it is utterly infuriating. For instance, Firefall was really fun to just dick around with, trying to surf around everywhere and so forth. I typically do fairly well in Battlefield so sometimes I'll switch it up and see how many people I can kill using only a blowtorch, though it is unsurprising when I amass twice as many deaths as kills. On the other hand, Counterstrike puts me in danger of getting an ulcer if I'm on the team that's being demolished every round and it seems like every enemy player one-hits from across the map whenever I so much as gently breathe out of my nose. CoD's small maps and random spawns mean that I'm either enjoying an unstoppable 40-man killstreak or watching my deathcam more than actually playing, which is why I stopped playing by myself around the time of MW2 and began the practice of playing with a horde of friends so we could be cheap bastards. I must say the experience has improved significantly since then. (Read "since then" as "Black Ops 1," because I'm not made of money for fuck's sake, who can afford dropping $60 on one series every year?)

I feel your pain, buddy. Up until about 2010, I was using an old 2003 PC, and then I got a new computer and had my hopes crushed by its mediocrity- integrated graphics and so on. My PC right now is fairly decent, back in December I was lucky enough to install a larger PSU which let me finally use this old nVidia card I had (9600GT), so I can now run pretty much the majority of modern games without too much trouble. 8GB of RAM, ~2.8ghz dual-core (which is probably my weakest link right now) Pretty okay.
Some games just utterly hate my computer though. DX:HR was a massive bitch to try to run. On 1024x768 resolution, with everything on the lowest possible settings, I got about 15 FPS and every time I turned a corner and had to render a new area, my GPU's fan got worryingly loud. Needless to say I ended up playing through that particular game on console.
