Nooo! Don't climb up and get the item! That's what they expect you to do, which means that's what's going to KILL you! Either it's a bomb or the object on which you have to stand in order to reach the item will collapse under your weight and drop you into an ENDLESS PIT OF DOOM!
Oh, and I wouldn't suggest checking your inventory either. That way, you can assume you have an item later on, even if you don't. If you check, then you'll know you don't have the item, which means when you get to the boss, you can't just say "I take out my bazooka and make a bloody mess."
Besides, I already know what's going to happen if you check your inventory.
