Ah Psychonauts - how I love thee...
Gothic II is also good, though I have yet to complete it (its hard - I mean *really* hard) and has a very impressive atmosphere.
If Oblivion had felt as alive as Gothic II (and a lesser degree III) then it would have been much, much more enjoyable.
All these games are ancient by modern standards so you can pick them up for a song.
And everyone should play Masq too. Though only if you're mature of mind.

Lots of people say that, but in fact there's a lot of things to contradict it too as well as there are to back it up.Colicedus wrote:Sequels are killers I think.
Particularly when they get to a 3rd or 4th
For instance, it is the opinion of many the albums that Muse released improved as they progressed, each better than the last.
That's not my opinion really, but I know for a fact that it's the opinion of many of the people I've seen/heard talk about them.
I know it works with movies, lots of time the sequels are not as good as the originals, the story is not new anymore and that's the only thing movies are good for.
But for games it isn't just about the story, in fact it's very little to do with the story, there are lots of other things that are more important likes graphics, gameplay, and more content. I'm not going to think the next Grand Theft Auto is going to suck because it can't match the original, video games are pretty much always better the longer they are there. Metal Gear Solid used to be retarded, I never cared about it, but now it's like the only reason to get a ps3 (and still not a good enough reason).
The only time sequels are bad are when they are no longer true improvements to the game, they are, at best, a step sideways for the franchise. Take Dynasty Warriors or Tenchu, those are terrible.

The Marathon games was okay.
Zantalos, I'll have to disagree with you there. Metal Gear Solid was the best of all of them. Metal Gear Solid 2 was the next best. Metal Gear Solid 3 was boring in parts, something which I didn't experience with either of the first two games. It was a good game but some parts or aspects of it were just meh. The storyline seemed kinda tacked on. It didn't have the feel the first two games did.
I think story can be a huge part in games but not everything. If Prey didn't have such a cool and epic storyline that got better as it went along then it would never have been as fun.
Also, the same with all the Final Fantasy games. Final Fantasy 7 would have been nothing without story. Graphics? It had no graphics. Lol

It's annoying to me that Final Fantasy 7 has become the definitive modern RPG. I'm not going to deny that FF7 was a great game; but I think the fact that so many games have simply ripped off FF7's formula has seriously degraded its value as a game.
I mean, pick up any Japanese-style RPG off the shelf and chances are it's going to be inspired in some way by FF7. I don't really play Japanese RPGs too much anymore - they're becoming too stale for me, aside from the occasional gem like FFXII or Tales of Symphonia. Fortunately games like Last Remnant are looking to spice up the genre a bit - maybe next-gen power will allow this genre to evolve.
For those of you that were around pre-FF7 you know that RPGs then were suffering from Dragon Quest Syndrome - almost every 16-bit RPG was about warriors and sorcerers battling to defeat some great evil. Then Earthbound came along and satirized the whole genre.
I would love to see a game that does to the post-FF7 RPG what Earthbound did to the Dragon Quest Era RPG.
In conclusion, if any of you haven't had a chance to play Earthbound yet, now would be a great time to try.
