Games every gamer should be required to play at some point

There is a perfectly logical explanation for why Gears of War was so loved. Gears of War is a classic example of a large company piling on the hype.
When the PS3 was set to launch, Microsoft had originally wanted the release of Halo 3 to coincide with that launch date. Unfortunately Bungie wasn't going to make the deadline, so Microsoft needed something else big to propel it through the PS3 launch. So, they found a slightly overlooked game from Epic Studios and hyped it into the stratosphere. Gears of War probably would have gotten good scores as a decent shooter. Pile on the hype train, and it suddenly becomes the game to end all games.
All Gears of War did was take the classic run-and-gun shooter, make it a stop-and-pop, and suddenly it's hailed as the greatest innovation in shooting games. When I finally got to play it I thought I would have a transcendent video game experience, and when I didn't I was slightly disappointed. (Although the instant reload feature was a pretty sweet innovation.)
I'm not saying Gears of War is a bad game, by any means. It's just not a classic, must-play game.

For one Gears has the best graphics out of any game i have seen even a year later (i know you didn't talk about the graphics). It has been a classic since the day it came out. I cant stop playing it. The stop and pop has never been done and they did it beautifully (wait thats kinda stupid. . .there the first ones so . . . ehh nevermind). Just because it had massive hype doesn't mean its gonna be a better game. I mean look at Shadow of the Collosus. It had very little or no hype and its one of the greatest adventure games. Everything you do in gears of war has to be thought out. If you don't think you die. If you want a good example of over hype look at Halo 3. That game is the most basic fps, nothing is innovating (sure the map editor looks cool and the new infected mode sounds awesome but thats it). I can't really think of anything else to say but when i do ill edit this post.
Edit 2 seconds later: The reason why the large company was piling on the hype was because the game is legendary.
Edit: oh it also has chainsaws. . . on your machine gun and you can stomp your opponents head into the ground. . . nuff said

Gears of War was way, WAY, WAAAY overhyped.
They made it look like the greatest game ever created and that it would change the way we looked at FPS's forever.
I played it for 5 minutes, got bored, stopped playing, turned on Hitman: Blood Money.
Speaking of which. Blood money is awesome. There are so many different ways you can kill. The only problem is that the game doesn't really help you along. In your first real level you have to kill 2 guys, I tried being stealthy, but gave up and grabbed a shotgun and started blasting everyone out of my way.
Didn't really work. Guards easily outgun you.
If there was a small hint on where to go next, that would help alot. The first time I did that level, half the civilians died and a half of the survivors saw me.
