May the Sun be with you.

Post by Sartan » Tue Nov 20, 2007 7:14 pm

I bear news of a truly wondrous event that undoubtedly a handful of you at most know or care about. On November 22nd, the fan translation of Shin Bokura no Taiyou, third in the series that Hideo Kojima himself, the legend behind such sagas as Metal Gear Solid, holds within his heart as his personal brainchild, will be released to the public for all the enjoy. What a thrilling run-on sentence, you should all be delighted. The point, as it were, is that this is the best damn thing ever. Greater than peanut brittle, more powerful than a locomotive, Boktai will rock your socks right out of your shoes and you should all run clamoring to your closest game stores to buy it right now. Why, I hear your dubious and mistrusting voices ask, have you not heard of it? Because the bitter truth is that the majority of gamers are horrible fat lazy sluglike creatures who don't want to travel out into the world lit by our mother Sun, which as it turns out Boktai requires. Necessitates, even. And so they have dragged poor Boktai down into obscurity. It is to weep.

But enough meaningless hemming and hawing from my gaping maw. Feast your eyes upon this forum when the fateful day comes. Iron your best writhing-in-glee outfit. Tell your friends. Be the first on your block to collect the whole set. Go nuts.

Funny isn't it when people are on a forum they actually like? You wouldn't think it, Sartan, would you?

I am both shocked and appalled at such a novel concept.

It's almost revolting...

On a more topical note, the game looks like an action game from what I can see. What kind of game is it? It's for the Nintendo DS? That's what came up when I searched for it.

Nay nay. Boktai DS is the bastard child of the series. It is primarily a hack'n'slash lacking in the puzzles and gameplay of the first games, which are on the GBA.

As to the original three... Picture, if you will, an amalgamation of Metal Gear Solid stealth, Norse deities and weaponry, set in a twisted Fistful of Dollars world. Now imagine it's a thousand times as awesome as whatever you just imagined. It is Hideo Kojima's personal brainchild and it is everything that is right in the world.

Have an adorable trailer of Bokura no Taiyou, Boktai.
Here's one for Zoku Bokura no Taiyou, Zoktai - Solar Boy Django.
And of course, the star of the show, Shin Bokura no Taiyou, Shintai - Sabata's Counterattack!

Just for the hell of it, here's Boktai DS, worsened considerably by its transition to an english release.

ok that first trailer was the dumbest thing i have ever seen. The game looks cool but with the kids running outside and then relizing there in a shadow *GASP* ya lame. and funny. but mostly lame.

And he loves all of us. And cries when you don't buy his games.

Yeah Hideo definitely has a certain touch of pwnage…

I only found out about this pwnage about a week ago when I had a look into MGS. Instant fanboyism followed. I'm definitely getting a PS2 soon.

I really liked MGS, but didn't like any of the sequels.

They overdid it with the sequels. MGS had a solid storyline along with long play time ( well you could do it in 2 and half hours and i had to once do it in 1 and a half to get the Fox ranking ) and a good fighting system.

MGS2:SOL was fun at first because of the new aspects: running attacks, tranquilizers, destructible environments ( fire extinguishers, lights, etc ) but the Tanker chapter is so much more fun then the Plant, and the plant, unfortunately, takes up most of the game whereas tanker can be done in 20 minutes if rushed through. I would like to have seen it the other way around and i did not enjoy that you got the sword at the end when you were controlling Raiden and hordes of those weird ass enemies rushed out and started shooting you. You should have gotten that kick-ass weapon at the beginning. Hido Kijama fucked up big time by putting in all the right features at the wrong places.

MGS3:SE was pretty fun and long and it had the eating system, water and mud, climbing, etc, you could treat wounds, there were so many more weapons, advanced CQC combat, interrogations, and the enemies had more realistic fields of vision. And then of course the awesome camouflage system. But i didn't like how the radar was taken out, and how much stronger the enemies were in this game. Was amusing to play it at first, forcing alligators to swallow grenades, creeping up behind soldiers and slitting their throats, but it got a bit too complicated and long-winded as far as an MGS game goes.

The glorious day has come and passed, elate in its firey exaltitude! Or talk about Metal Gear, that works too.

Each of the games has its own mechanics, but none of them are really too similar to what MGS is becoming. Boktai focuses less on on the "Dig leeches out of your skin, mix and match camouflage values for maximum ridiculous factor, get lung cancer in real time" and more like the first Solid, a carefully judged balance between hurried stealth and rip-roaring murder action.

It also bears the dubious honor of being "That weird game that showed up in my Megamans" due to the astonishingly well done link between Zoktai/EXE4-5 and Shintai/EXE6. Shintai also wields the cameo of a popular popsicle mascot, because it just isn't Konami without the crazy.

Lacking any solid footage for sharing here, here's an adequate video of a Shintai boss battle. The first half, anyway~
