Everyone sucks at Dwarf Fortress

Post by FlagPole » Tue May 27, 2008 9:08 am

Dwarf fortress- The most complicated game and the most gory text based gorefest ever gored gory gore gored gore.

http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Main_Page

No doubt I'll get bored and die of thirst, but whatever. Let's go adventure mode.

I named myself Pretzel in honor of the pokemon fiasco. Human too.

Let's see...

"Pretzel Armchew the Big Crazy Killer-Anus of beer."

God I love naming my guys.

Anyway, since I have no idea how to play I'll just read the wiki the whole way through.

Hm..

That was fast-

I spawned in a random forest place. Dunno why. I should be in a town.

Whatever. I traveled around, but finding that towns had no specific tile I was lost. I found a cave, but found nothing of worth, so I left. soon afterwards while traveling through the "frosts of snot" I got attacked by a wolf, I wrestled with it, but then 2 more came. I tried to run, they started biting at my legs.
"The wolf shakes you around by the right upper leg!
It is broken!
The wolf spits out the human chunk."
It ended with-
"The wolf bites you in the head."
IT IS TORN APART

I WISH I was freaking kidding!

Still. That was hilarious. More later. If I survive longer than the first wolf strike.

Even AFTER I was dead the wolves stayed around to spit my own arms in my face. Jesus christ.

EDIT: HAY GUIS. LOOK WHAT I GOTTA DO-

Probably the best game ever.

Way too hard for me at the moment (I lose track of everything after about 8 months of development in fortress mode) but so ambitious you've got to love it.

My top 10 is getting awfully crowded :P

I absolutely love Dwarf Fortress. It is one of the deepest games I've ever played, and it's completely procedurally generated.

I keep dying, but the game amuses me.

Dwarf Fortress is great. I love imagining the blood and gore and various other little details that don't get displayed on-screen.

But, I like IVAN better. Hasn't had anything done to it by the 'official' developers since 2005. We think they're dead.

There's a community who try to keep the thing alive, with varying degrees of success. Here.

I was playing Dwarf Fortress today and I got killed by a little girl, a peasant, and a guard with spear (He ran me through, the bastard). The little girl started it, she wouldn't join my adventuring party on our quest to kill elephants. Here ends the tale of "An Obscurestop" (The DF random name generator is funny...).

There's some pretty funny DF stories taken from actual game play events here:

Hmm... this doesn't seem to be the Dwarf Fortress I remember. Odd.

Maybe reality has done a little sideways jump again and I'm the only person who remembers how it was before...

Heh, last time I looked at it it was 2D. Also I didn't know you could replace the tilesets.

It's hard to feel sorry for ASCII characters.

I didn't believe at first that the names were actually translated. The dude made up a frikkin' language.

And depth makes things good. Always. I love digging out immensely cavernous fortresses. Digging would be fun in adventurer mode.

Needs a fair amount of code cleanup though. It is huge, but all things considered it probably shouldn't take quite as long to save/load as it does. It also seems just a teeny processor-intensive for my tastes.

Mind you, these are extremely tiny hairline scratches on the surface of a deep and thoroughly enjoyable game.

As far as I know, you have to download a special version of Dwarf Fortress and its Windows only (might not be, but its built for Windows, I might be able to transfer the correct files over to make it work in the Mac version...)

Yes, but its hilarious.

Here lies "An Obscurestop" (I've also had a character named "Saltysack"), expert spearman and peasant killer. He was killed when a little girl broke his arm, a wrestler ripped it off, and the little girls parents beat him to death with it.

Yeah, that would have been cool.

It has to backup a 17,000 something by 17,000 something world every time you save.
Plus, there are a lot of processses that go on in the background.

(v0.27.176.38c, 6.5 MB, posted February 24/Intel, March 2/PPC, 2008. 10.3+ Intel/PPC, ~100MB Disk Space, 512MB RAM)
It's on the main page. That's the latest Dwarf Fortress version, both for Windows and Mac. If there's still problems for you, then it's a Mac thing, which unfortunately I'm not good at solving.

And I realise it has to save the area each time, but if you consider other Roguelikes which generally have to save a similar number of tiles, possibly slightly more, then the saving/loading times are just a little longer than they should be. I'm sure there's a damn good reason for this, but I think it could be optimised somewhat.
