So my PS3 broke today, I keep getting a disk read error, or my PS3 won't read the disk at all, so can anyone help me?

THE disk? Is this just a problem with one disk? It may be the disk's format- are you trying to play a PS2 disk? Is it scratched up? Have you done a laser cleaning lately? If these aren't any of the problems, then this might just be a rare breakdown. Odd, I've never really heard of that happening with a PS3.

If all else fails you could just get it serviced... I think...

Nope, its all disks, but I talked to Sony today, and they said I needed to send it in for servicing, so I'm kind of screwed because they said I wouldn't be able to get another 60gb version, and that I'd get an 80 instead

You fail at maths if that was not a joke that you are unhappy about getting a better hard drive.

Unless they charge you for the extra space.

I would personally prefer to have the 80gb version. I got the 40gb one soon before they came out with the 80gb version at the same price with the same features (except the 80gb hard drive of course =o)

*shrug* Oh well, I don't think I'd ever fill 40gb anyways.

Well, the 60-gig version is the only one that's compatible with PS2 games, and it's not produced anymore. You can only get new models of the 40gig, 80gig, and 120gig versions.

This is happening to me as well
Ive also got a good 'ole 60GB which wont read discs, no matter what format, scratched or not scratched, etc.
I havnt tried cleaning the laser or anything because i havnt had the time. Its out of warranty range so itll cost $315 (Australian) to be serviced by Sony...

Like me, youll probably have to try and diagnose the problem yourself then do a DIY job.

The 60GB PS3 is an older SKU. It has hardware enabled (emotion chip) backwards compatibility, so you can play all your PS2 games (LIKE RE4!!!). It also has a card reader, extra usb ports and CHROME TRIM! rather than the crappy grey/silver trim of later models that dont have the above features.

If you want a better HDD you can jsut replace the 60GB...its only a SATA drive.

So... you tried just getting a disk drive cleaner?

If you want backwards compatability just get a PS2. By now you can probably get them for less than a pound/dollar/currency if you look in the right place. Besides, that extra payment for the PS2 also means you can play PS1 games again.

Infact, I'm wondering if my sister bought that PS2 for anything other than FF7...

From what I've been told about optical cleaners, they don't really do much more then delay the inevitable.
