Computer Troubles!

Hey guys, I got a computer Problem.

Scenario:
Computer is a Hunk of junk in its computer golden years, Dating 2004-2005 when bought.
It was given to my Neice when we left for the USA, but It was returned to us when we returned to New Zealand.

The Problem: The Computer has stoped playing sounds. it will not play sounds except for mp4's on Winamp.
Game sounds, system sounds, you name it can not play. There is obviously operaton in the speakers as they give off the typical hum when you turn them up. The sound card is Onboard the Mother board.

When volume control is opend up, it displays an Error message

There are no active mixer devices avalable. To install a Mixer device go to control pannel, click printers and other hardware, then click add hardware.

This Program will now close

In sounds and Audio devices the Slider for volume is stuck on Min and it says there are no audio devices. When playing a system sound though the preferances there, the computer says that it can not play the sound ... your Sound card may be in use.

Objective: Get the sound running again.
Help is much apreciated.

Can you please tell us what kind of computer you have. I might know whats wrong...

Its a PC
PC: Windows XP Verson 2002, Service pack 3.

Um, I used to have this problem with my desktop, I had to plug head phones into the jack, and that fixed everything. You might have to restore it if that fails. You could also try plugging in different speakers, or trying to to fix it in system preferences.

Ps, It's been a while since I've used Xp, So these might not work.

thanks... hey, if the instructons are rediclous, its gotta be an XP machine.
