Beginning but no end

Death but no killing

Guns but no shooting

Days but no weeks

Frowns but no sadness

I'm pretty sure I've got it.

In my world there are people who are weak, but none who are strong; people who are slow, but none who are fast; people who are stupid, but none who are smart.

OK, I see that most people have caught onto two concepts that I don't think Lotus is going for. First is antonyms, opposite words (Light but no dark); second is cause/effect (keys & locks, samurai & swords); from what I've gathered, it is sometimes about opposites, but they have to be related. For instance, green but no blue; those are both colors. Little but no big; those are both sizes.

Don't think this is a fool-proof theory, because spoon & cereal is kind of like cause/effect.

first was right. actually there's killing but no death, shooting but no guns, weeks but no days, and sadness but no frowns.

Dang, I though I had it... It's got a startling similarity to plenty more riddles I've solved.

That hint is indeed big, though... let me test the theory it springs to my mind...

There's... brass and copper but no iron?

This has just got to be right, I know it.

There's millennia but no years...Do I get a cookie yet?

Oh I completely understand it all now. I didn't realize there was a specific order.

Alright then-

Kittens but no cats.

And I'm too lazy to come up with any more.

Oh. It's a pattern thing. I was totally off track.

Let's see now...

In my world there is cause but no effect.

Wood but no trees.

Trees but no timber.

Timber but no... err... never mind, scratch that one.

Bricks but no walls.

Hmm. I'm still a bit iffy on the order. Reading back through the thread, Im starting to suspect that Lotus is also a bit iffy on the order.
