OG Fan Fic! Part WhyTheHellIsNoOneReadingIt?

Post by Ragdollmaster » Fri Jun 19, 2009 7:31 pm

Coming soon to a lolboard near you, another fan fiction, inspired by Kestril's amazingly written Overgrowth Fan Fic ;)

Here's the little twist; you guys have some control over what happens! I have a couple alternate plots written out where major actions can change the line of the story depending on what you, the users, pick! Note; this isn't a CYOA. It will have major posts like Kestril's, but some of them will have choices at the end of the posts. You as the users can post what you think the character(s) should do at that point of the story, possibly influencing the story for better or worse. I did this to make it more interactive and also make it go the way more people would like to see it go. Note; this isn't a "LOLFIRST" kind of thing, I'll be looking at all the posts three days after my story posts and see what the general idea of the users is.

Also note, I might not really even consider completely retarded ideas; eg, have the hero do a barrel roll and pull off his pants, the momentum of his spinning causing his intestines to scrunch up and extend rapidly, firing off his excrement at a rapid rate into the eyes of his enemies!

...ok, shit, I probably just scared away half my potential audience. But anyways, usually, the choices will be between two or three very vague ones (kill/don't kill, for example) so that users can agree easier instead of having 20 different suggestions. Also; if you want something very specific to happen, send me a PM and I'll see if I can tie it in! Don't put any great ideas when I'm waiting for suggestions :) I'd love to hear them all, and while the thread would be a seemingly logical place to put them, I might not notice it, whereas PMs are quite noticeable up there on that UCP.

Now, I've got a basic outline prepared and I'm coming up with most of the main characters already. I'll be writing this / posting it up on the forums officially beginning on Monday, June 22nd of 2009.

And probably at least 1/5 of you are thinking "WTF IS WITH HIS TITLE", which will be explained throughout the story if you don't really get it yet =P

Will Feature
-Intensive plot spread out over a great number of posts (not defined yet; I'll try to keep them all as small as possible so it's not a bore reading them)
-Original storyline (well, as original as you can get nowadays; pretty much EVERYTHING has been done...)
-A wide cast of characters
-The Island Of Lugaru, described on a massive scale
-A large cast of characters
-A 'shadow companion' idea; thought it up after reading Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy, I thought his ideas of daemons was pretty awesome and decided to spice it up. This time, the animals are the one with daemons o: DUN DUN DUN. WHERE'S YOUR GOD NOW*?
-Halfway through, I might start making small explanations; if you've ever read a book with extra material at the end of each chapter or at the end of the last chapter, you probably know what I'm talking about. I might explain the shadow companions more here or elaborate on the backstory, something I can't really do in the story realistically for it to sound like a work of fiction.

Get ready for the second-best (and only other) active fan fic on Wolfire! (Which could also be called the worst if Kestril's is better, I guess :o)

More than likely.

Looking forward to it, In fact, I'll make you a Template with GIMP With that catchy title. Be advised: I'm gone for a week starting Monday, so If I don't get 'er done this weekend It'll be awhile. I think I'll be able to post, but story updates and 'artwork' will be down.
And probably at least 1/5 of you are thinking "WTF IS WITH HIS TITLE",
yeah, but it's catchy as heck. Now I have to think of a title.

Reminds me immediately of Garth Nix's The Seventh Tower series, I'll be sure to pick up something by Mr. Pullman at the next stop to the library.

Well, it's the second best fan fic, but the best active one, since I repeatedly go weeks without updates. I'm looking forward to reading what you have next Monday, er , Sunday if I can't get to the glorious internet all that week. The good news about inactivity: It gives me time to brainstorm.

Remember:
The pen is mightier than the sword. . .

Edit:
WOW! That was fast! and 300% More better than any of my other ones, have a look-see:

and the direct link so you can place this on top, a "titlebar" I guess:

^^Just copy + paste and put the image tags around it.^^
If you don't like it, let me know and I'll try something else. What's in the bar is basically what I get from the title. I'm a newbie with GIMP, and it turning out that well was pretty much pure fluke. Enjoy.

the only problem I can see with this is that you can't send pm's on the forums anymore.

Roland: Oh, really? Well scratch that out.

Kestril: Heh, if you plan to, the Dark Materials trilogy covers three books; The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. You can get them all in one book, though, I think, as like a special edition collection thing. Quite a long read for all three, I think like 600-800 pages (forgot exactly how many XD)

And I love that title bar! It's very well done. I think I'll put that at the beginning of all my major story posts so that they're easily differentiable from the rest of the thread's posts.

Eruditemoose: Quite pleased to hear that :D

Yeah yeah, double-post, sue me. Enjoy the titlebars.

Part Zero - Prologue
This will address a few things about the story.

Wanna see the main cast of characters? They'll be mentioned most often, but don't worry, you won't have to keep up with all of them; many times I'll have the story split into two and alternate the parts per chapter. Other times, the less important ones may be left out of the story entirely or left behind to come back in later.

Party A - The original main cast of characters whom start at the beginning of the story.
Etrius- The Protagonist. His shadow companion is Eliza. Etrius is a rabbit.
Ethan- Etrius' companion. His shadow companion is Mia. Ethan is a rabbit.
Roufas- Etrius' companion. His shadow companion is Beatriz. Roufas is a wolverine.
Kate- Etrius' childhood friend. Her companion is Ivan. Kate is a rabbit.

Party B - The trained group of fighters with connections to Etrius.
Sienna- Also a Protagonist. Her shadow companion is Elias. Sienna is a jackal.
Destin- A trickster. His shadow companion is Fatima. Destin is a fox.
Enzo- A sword master. His shadow companion is Xyris. Enzo is a wolf.
Turbidity- An assassin. Her shadow companion is Gustave. Turbidity is a bat.

Party C - The bad guys, basically.
Fenris - Antagonist. No shadow companion, but is intelligent. Fenris is a giant wolf.
Berrin - Minor Antagonist. His shadow companion is Aleta. Berrin is a bear.
Lance - Weapons Master. His shadow companion is Snow. Lance is a tiger.
Virgil - Weapons Master. His shadow companion is Eden. Virgil is a leopard.

I won't be revealing much of the plot, but it starts off quite ordinary and expectant on the Island Of Lugaru, there are multiple wars involved, a conspiracy part, and a hint of mysticism/magic thrown in near the end.

So... what are Shadow Companions?

All living anthropomorphic creatures in Ethereal Callings have Shadow Companions. Shadow Companions are intangible masses of energy that make up the whole of a creature; creatures without Shadow Companions are significantly less intelligent and are also mainly feral, with very few exceptions. Shadow Companions serve as a voice of reason, or conscience, for an animal in EC, and stick close to their fleshly counterparts. When a creature dies or suffers, the damage is mirrored on the Shadow Companion.

Shadow Companions can, in theory, assume the form of any animal. They will appear as completely black masses, however, mere shapes and forms, not tangible beasts. More powerful Shadow Companions will belong to more powerful creatures, and the more power they possess, the stronger of a creature they can turn into. For instance, a relatively weak Shadow Companion would probably not be able to morph into anything larger than a medium-sized feral dog. A very powerful Shadow Companion could morph into something as large as a rhinoceros or elephant.

Shadow Companions can only be hurt by other Shadow Companions, due to the unique energy they're made up of, called ethereal energy. If the Shadow Companion takes damage, then the living counterpart will as well- it's a two-way effect. Shadow Companions can therefore be killed by stronger Shadow Companions, but their duels are long and painful and typically avoided for that reason.

Shadow Companions tend to be the opposite sex of their counterparts, but there are some exceptions to this rule.

yeah kestril's right it sounded a lot like the seventh tower. might have to read the dark materials trilogy since I liked the seventh tower series a lot, it always somehow made me mad there were only six books when it was called the seventh tower though.

Really? Quick explanation- in the trilogy, daemons were small creatures who took the forms of animals. All humans had daemons. Daemons were intelligent enough to speak and could shift forms into different animals, until their human companions hit a certain age (around puberty); at this point they assumed a permanent form which reflected the true nature of their human and could show the personality of that human. Daemons were more or less a physical representation of what people might call their soul.

The whole trilogy is a subtle metaphor explaining growing up, in a way, with a great backstory to boot.

Also; did you even read that huge wall of text above your post Roland? XD I feel a little under appreciated. I'm not going to make that kind of stuff if no one reads it...

yeah I did I just couldn't think of anything to respond to it. It seemed like an explanation and explanation in my mind require no responses, however if you would like a congratulations or praise for your character names then I'll give it, nice variety there with the names, left me wondering about the shadow companions though because you gave there names, but no description of what form they might prefer or what not. yeah Seventh Tower wasn't so subtle, it had the Chosen who all had spirit shadows for the adults and shadow guards for the children, the shadow guards could change shape but couldn't talk, spirit shadows could only stretch their shape but they could also talk and were stronger, the shadows required light to survive or be strong, but could also be hurt by light. that was hard cause the world was covered with a veil to keep the sunlight out, but chosen had stones that provided the lightfrom sunstones. anyway not going to go wayyyyyyyy far into detail.

Oh, ok. About the preferred forms; Shadow Companions can always change forms, no matter how old the tangible companion is. Most of the time, their form will change to accommodate their companion, or be some preferred form, yeah. I just couldn't really think of any. I guess the default form for an SC would be just a shapeless sphere of ethereal energy, taking shape of an animal at will.

*Wipes a bead of sweat from his brow* Whew! None of my future character names have been used, except maybe Fernis, or Feriner, but I ended up thinking it was overused and discarded it. I haven't seen much yet, but hopefully I'll be able to leave comments while I can't update my fanfic, and hopefully some healthy competition will make me write and update faster.

As far as the Golden Compass, I think I saw the movie. There is probably some strong symbolism in it, mainly "The Magesterium" = "Organized Church" But that's all I got. The books probably better, I'll pick it up. Anyway, Garth Nix is a pretty fun author to read, although I never could get around to reading Sir Thursday in another series of his. (In case you're interested, it goes: Mister Monday, Grim Tuesday, Drowned Wensday, Sir Thursday, (Something) Friday (Something, Lady?) Saturday, and Lord Sunday. It's filled with a bunch of time stuff, in case you haven't guessed)

Enough with this idle chatter, get on with it!

Oh, the books are far better than the movie. I was quite disappointed when I saw the movie, it didn't show many of the gory scenes or deaths, or the opening of the second world Cittagaze. (Or something like that.) The sequels are pretty cool, too.

As far as Fenrir goes, I wanted to have an antagonist eerie enough to EC's universe to scare the crap out of the characters while being strong enough to be a practical challenge. An animal without a Shadow Companion is like a human without a face, as a comparison, and Fenrir is a mythological giant wolf with powers strong enough to rival the gods, so I thought, "Why not?" Sorry if I've accidentally taken one of your ideas, Kestril XD

In the meantime, while I write up the first post for tomorrow, watch this video of Obama as a ninja. CHOP SUEY THAT FLY.

Oh look another double post. NOTE: Because the term shadow companion is a bit long, most of the time it will abbreviated to 'shadow' in the story. Kind of like a shortened version, the way people might say the USA instead of the United States of America.

A drone filled the air as another flamed arrow struck the side of a wooden cart filled with weapons. The city, under siege, screamed as it was plundered by the ruthless pride of lions. As another volley of arrows struck villagers and buildings, there was a crash as the main gate fell open to the battering ram of the invaders.

Guards swept forward, but their tiny athletic rabbit bodies were nothing compared to the towering giants rushing forward. As the first guard took a slash, his sword broke in half from a parry by a huge lion, and then the same happened to his head. Archers outside started aiming for the deeper parts of the city, killing more reserve guards by the minute.

As the entire city was set aflame, the archers rushed in behind the infantry to deliver deadly percision shots to the soldiers inside. "Spearsmen, Phalanx positions! Cover the main intersections while the civilians flee!" a commander shouted.

More and more armored soldiers now emerged to go ahead of the fortified Phalanx positions, better trained, better equipped, and better suited for combat- wolves. Their shadows took the same form, bristling and eager for the blood of combat.

A lion uttered a harsh scream as it vaulted off a roof and fell onto a wolf, sword point first, but a mighty slash from another wolf landed on his neck, nearly killing him. As he stumbled back, his shadow was suddenly assaulted by a pack of wolf shadows; five in total, each seizing a limb of the lion shadow and the fifth his neck, pulling simultaneously. There was a loud burst as ethereal energy filled the air and the shadow vanished, the lion dying at that moment.

The wolves grinned as they stared down the approaching lions; they were outnumbered at least two to one, but they had the reserves behind them who could take out the lions if the wolves could cripple them enough. They knew only one thing at that moment; killing. The violence flowed through their blood as they howled, a deafening noise that shook the rafters of flaming buildings, and charged forward.

Meanwhile, the majority of civilians were escaping out the rear, into mountainous forest land. They were all running as fast as possible, some taking up ambush positions to protect their families, others finding hiding holes near the city in case the lions were defeated. Most, however, ran and ran throughout the forest, sticking in their own small groups of one or two families. They each had their own destinations.

One couple of rabbits was moving in the direction of a large city they knew of, one they had grown up in as children, called Hahn Nova. In the wife's arms, a small baby rabbit, just barely older than a newborn, yawned and turned over, snuggling deeper into his mother's embrace. His name was Etrius.

OK; as far as updates go, I'll try to make them as soon as possible. The very minimum would be one a week, if I go on vacation or something, but try to expect one part every two or three days.

Okay, before I start, I might seem a little critical, well, that's because I am a little critical. Overall, it's great, and I really want some more to read, but here are some nitpicks:

Ragdollmaster wrote:

Okay, you seem to really like the "This happens" as "that happens" structure here. It's not bad or anything, it just gets repetitive. Side note: I found the "a drone filled the air" a bit confusing at first, dunno why, so I can't help.
Guards swept forward, but their tiny athletic rabbit bodies were nothing compared to the towering giants rushing forward. As the first guard took a slash, his sword broke in half from a parry by a huge lion, and then the same happened to his head. You have a little bit of agreement confusion there: Archers? Whose archers? Isn't the battle outside anyway? Just clarify it more and you'll be fine.
As the entire city was set aflame, the archers rushed in behind the infantry to deliver deadly percision shots to the soldiers inside. "Spearsmen, Phalanx positions! Cover the main intersections while the civilians flee!" a commander shouted.
Again: Which side is the commander on? Clarafy.

rest is good.
