he did just say that he thought it sucked not that it sucked, and he said that he did better which I agree with.

‘He has as many as 200 unpublished songs that he is planning to leave behind for his children when he dies. They can’t be touched by the creditors, but they could be worth as much as £60million that will ensure his kids a comfortable existence no matter what happens,’ one of his collaborators revealed.
holy crap ...

It seems he had his priorities fairly straight

Wow, holy crap indeed.

What a life, if that article is even mostly true. Seems pretty reasonably written anyway.

I'm not even a fan, for the most part, but that is an epic story for one person's life. The health problems sound like a serious beatdown, throw in some drugs, hide that you're gay, have a crazy family, ring up $400 million in debt, get old... oof. :(

Heard about 3 hours of music, chronologically arranged, on the local college station today, (KALX FTW!) and some of it was pretty interesting for dance/pop tunes. Not a lot of ground-breaking, even for the time he did it, but I don't think you could get so massively popular without a "giving the peoples what they want" style.

The stuff where he had artistic control was definitely cooler than the bubblegum factory Jackson5 boyband crap, but no surprise there.

What the hell are you on about? Jackson 5 had some fantastic songs. The cover of I'll Be There, I Want You Back, Can You Feel It, Dancing Machine, ABC, Blame It On The Boogie, Rockin' Robin and Maybe Tomorrow. They're songs that are still played today.

Yeah, THOSE are good songs, but of course the college radio guys have to play an hour and a half of J5 period stuff, and at 2:23 minutes a song that leaves an awful lot of space for what's on the rest of the albums, and that stuff sounds like it was hand crafted for nothing but taking money from 11 year olds.

Just an opinion.

I guess it's always a problem: dredge up the non-hits of lots of bands and you'll get...

It's not easy to have an album full of Top 10-quality songs. That's an unreasonable expectation. All their songs can't be fantastic.

true.

I think what bothers me is the WAY they're bad: it's the impression of crafty pandering... like they were checking in with a focus group, making sure they had all the right bits from the catalog of what sells. They even had some trippy song with a groovy sitar on it.

of course i guess any dancy pop band risks sounding like that sometimes, and they were effectively a modern created and marketed "boy band", so accusing them of pandering is pretty dopey.

I take it back.

+ when a few of them played live on the stage together as grownups they were really talented musicians.

A great time when you're on the way up, a tough life when it falls apart. RIP Michael.

What I want to know is why the hell we're talking about Michael Jackson. I came to this thread to talk about Michal.

Over 200 unpublished songs left for his kids? I thought he never had kids....

Anywho, Michael Jackson was cool, and it really sucks that he died.
