Here some google results for the topic. And that can very well affect this website and forums as well, when you think about it.
I'm in Australia.

When this was first announced I was downright infuriated. Luckily the government is currently unable to get it through one of our two houses of parliament. Huh... never thought I would be grateful for the Liberal party.

Anyway, the proposed blacklist was leaked to the internet some time back. It was largely made up of illegal porn of various flavours. Child porn, rape, bestiality, that sort of thing. (I'd put a link up but there is some genuinely nasty shit on said list, so no.) Unfortunately, they then started adding sites relating to abortion, homosexuality, regular porn, euthanasia and, yes, video games.

The initial trials showed that the proposed filter system:
a) Produced nasty slowdown. The more accurate the filter, the slower it goes.
b) Didn't even f**king work, even when operating correctly.
c) Could often be avoided or bypassed, no 1337 hax0r skills required.

The whole point of this thing is to protect kids from looking at stuff they probably don't need to see. Never mind that children under 11-12 or thereabouts aren't going to be interested anyway. Unfortunately an automatic filtering system can't tell the difference between a 13 year old boy looking for pictures of naked chicks and a 24 year old adult who wants to know more about abortion (or buy Overgrowth.)

Personally, I am sick to death of this whole "think of the children" crap. If parents are too incompetent to monitor what their kids do on the computer, that is their problem, not mine. Use an optional filter or something. Idiots.

I am fully aware of how cliche and unimpressive it is to threaten violence on an internet forum, but if that censoring policy ever goes through, I intend to find the nearest politician who supported it and set his home on fire.

[/rant]

I feel much better now.

Censorship is extremely irritating I mean censorship of stuff that's illegal, i.e. kiddy porn, I don't mind, but when you're playing an M game and you're on a server that says "No cussing there are children here" who's fault is that that there are children? if the parents don't want their kids to hear cussing why do they not care that they're seeing people's arms blown off in a game that's not rated for kids anyway? it's ridiculous.

Not to mention most M rated games have cuss words spewing out the ass, let alone the mouth in the single player portion and sometimes even in the pre-made sayings for the online portion so a matter of no cussing on the server is totally fucking irrelevant anyways.

EDIT: Hope the mods don't get mad at that...kinda attracted attention to inappropriate parts of my paragraph's body =P

Nobody minds when "stuff that's illegal" is censored, if they personally aren't interested in experiencing it. Until something that they like gets put on the chopping block (M rated games anyone?) and then they raise a shit storm.
My opinion.. make everything available. That doesn't mean that everything should be displayed publicly (no child porn on billboards. If you want to see child porn, play M rated games, or browse white-supremacist websites then that should not be prevented.

I might be wrong but I sense some implied criticism of my post, maybe not though hahaha. it's just that the games have the rating as a form of censorship, so any further censorship i.e. to protect children from hearing cusswords as they hack people apart and watch graphic cut scenes in a game with a rating that says that since the parents let them play that they don't care what their children see or hear.

I agree with you that it's stupid to worry about players cussing in a game where they are running around shooting each other in the face.

Doesn't normal WoW have skeletons?
Not in China, I understand. They have zombies instead of skeletons.

Tokage, thanks for the extra facts. I knew a bit about this, but hadn't really looked into it.

Secondly, if you upload files to a secure server (where you can't just type in the url of the file to view it) no one, not even the Google Bot, can access them. It's completely blocked.
Thanks for answering my questions.

Censorship is bullshit. Period.

That's all there is to it.

The lowest form of censorship, age ratings, I can understand those. The rest are just like "LET'S REMOVE ALL MEDIA SO THAT CHILDREN WON'T HAVE ANY WAYS OF TURNING BAD FROM TV"
