Graaahhhhh can't make up my mind
Re: Graaahhhhh can't make up my mind
I noticed you put up a new blogpost, great!
The flash player didn't work, as you said, so I downloaded the z8 file.
However, I can't find a program suitable for the file extension.
(Googling for z8 only brought up z8Games, among other uninteresting things... )

Right now, it's going in this order:
Interactive fiction -> some GM prototypes -> (possibly some Atari games ->) Crow, Unknown -> #3, aka The Ghost of My Former Self -> who knows what

Re: Graaahhhhh can't make up my mind
Old subject, I know, but the recent release of WebGL got me thinking, and I didn't want to start a new topic.
I wonder if I should start learning the ins and outs of HTML5 and program things like Crow, Unknown in Javascript/WebGL in an HTML canvas. Seems like it would be easy enough and then I could apply the Javascript to Unity later on, as well.
I don't know. Just thinking. Still haven't settled on a programming/scripting language yet.

All I know is Java, so I can't be of much help with your choice.

Re: Graaahhhhh can't make up my mind
Okay, for now, I have a new goal: Get hired by someone as a writer. Paid or not, I'm enjoying writing more than anything currently.
Re: Graaahhhhh can't make up my mind
Writing is actually quite fun when you've gotten really into it.
I used to write this web-story of mine, with characters representing members from the forum I was currently active on, where I also posted my story. They seemed to enjoy reading it.
Perhaps, if you'd like, you could do something similiar?

Re: Graaahhhhh can't make up my mind
I've been working on a book, actually. I have about a chapter...and a little bit of a second chapter and a guideline for the prologue (I need to make it significantly longer and I know that...3 pages usually won't cut it). I've been enjoying it, but since it's the end of the school year, I haven't had a lot of time for it. I'll be able to get working on it a bit more after this weekend though.
Re: Graaahhhhh can't make up my mind
That's awesome, dare to spoil some storyline for us?

Re: Graaahhhhh can't make up my mind
I actually got the basic idea from combining the Three Little Pigs and American McGee's Grimm/Alice in my head.
The end result is a less twisted, but still more brutal version of the classic fairy tale.
The story follows a wolf thief...who gets caught, and is to be hanged, but gets off easy by doing service to the baron and king. I don't have much yet. Only one chapter and all. >.> I do plan on it being based on more than just that single plot line and plan on it being much more intricate. There is a war going on, after all. I still haven't decided the whole "bigger picture" thing, as of yet. Not enough characters for even myself to consider just yet.
Here's the prologue synopsis I have had for my own benefit. Maybe that'll interest you. It seems a little odd at first, but I was going for originality. We don't need more rebel insurgence groups based entirely on stealth kills.
WARNING: Reads a lot like the intro to a movie.

Prologue
It all started with a beggar...
A single wolf from Grale had gone to Rait's capital, Egon, to beg the hog king to help our dying country. We had been stricken with poverty, our lands ravaged by a plague, and our war efforts running us dry at every turn. Our pride had run us to the ground. We needed help.
The hog king, infuriated that such a long-standing enemy could ever ask them for help, had the wolf executed, and in an act of hatred, had one of his messengers take the wolf's head before our beloved ruler.
He was outraged, and had the messenger locked away to rot. Not a day later, even with no money to back it, he declared war on Rait...
The war didn't last long. After only a week, funding ran out entirely, and we couldn't support the military any longer. All but the front line was pulled back, and Grale was soon overrun.
Taken by storm, the nation itself didn't stand a chance, and the capital was razed before us. It was a sad day, the day that the sky went black.
Soon after the capital was razed, the hog king's three sons divided Grale amongst themselves and began to build their own capitals. It wasn't long before the hog population took notice and moved on the opportunity. They took as much land as they could for themselves, leaving the wolves in harsh outside conditions where many starved.
Things continued as they had been, growing progressively worse as each season came and passed. The rule of the hogs didn't seem to see an ending, and the morale of the entire wolf race was in the gutter now.
Fifty years it continued, and fifty years the hogs slowly began to release their stranglehold on the wolf race.
But some people just can't leave well enough alone...
A group of rebel wolves gathered in the woods one night and planned a strike on the new hog capital. The group, led by a wolf named Daschbon, struck in the place where no one expected them to. Their possessions.
For years, this group of rebels went undeterred, as they stole furniture, jewelry, and even weapons and armor to strike out at the hogs' reign of cruelty every chance they got.
Then, one day, they were found...
None of them are sure exactly what happened. They only know that, somehow, the hogs found their hideout in the woods, and that they were finished.
The hogs burned the hideout, clearly eliminating all of the possessions in it, and killing three-quarters of the rebel group. The remaining survivors fled into town where they began to hideout anywhere they could. Sewers, back alleys, anywhere they could hide after a heist and be ready for the next night.
Unsatisfied that the thieves were still striking their strongholds in the night, the barons began to send guards to patrol the streets at night. They were determined, they were going to stop the madness.
When the night patrols proved fruitless, the barons began to crack the whip on wolf citizens. They would take men, women, and children alike, threatening them to hang if they didn't tell them what they knew.
Unfortunately for the people, they knew nothing...
Eventually, Daschbon had no choice but to step forward and turn himself in. He couldn't risk the lives of those he was fighting to protect. He was sentenced to hang for his actions, and on the day he hanged, many a wolf gathered to pay their respects to the fallen hero of the wolves.
Satisfied for the time being, the barons gave up the hunt for thieves and moved on to a greater threat. But unbeknownst to them, the rebellion lay in wait, waiting for the perfect moment to strike, until...

Oh God, I'm sorry that I didn't comment on this sooner.
I really think that you're onto something there, it is very well written and is easy to take in and accept as a background story. I especially like that it involves the world of Lugaru and Overgrowth. (... or atleast resembles it) I don't know where you got the idea with the Hogs, but they sure made a great contribution to the story.
In short. Great story, I smell a best-seller and I'd like your verbal dictionary.

No problem. Everyone has priorities and all.Freshbite wrote:Oh God, I'm sorry that I didn't comment on this sooner.
Too short and too movie-intro like, I think. It needs to be a bit more elaborated, in my opinion.Freshbite wrote:I really think that you're onto something there, it is very well written and is easy to take in and accept as a background story.
Eh, anthropomorphic animals and interracial wars? Yeah. Everything else? Not quite.Freshbite wrote:I especially like that it involves the world of Lugaru and Overgrowth. (... or atleast resembles it)
Three Little Pigs! Just had to make them a bit more brutal if they were going to take over wolven territory.Freshbite wrote:I don't know where you got the idea with the Hogs, but they sure made a great contribution to the story.
Yeah, like I said, I enjoy writing, and they say that when you enjoy something, you tend to excel at it.Freshbite wrote:In short. Great story, I smell a best-seller and I'd like your verbal dictionary.

Update:
Remember the Endaron storyline? Got me a job writing for a game called Pandimus. Unfortunately, it's a volunteer job, seeing as they can't afford to pay their writers just yet, but there seems to be a promise of money in there somewhere in the future, and at the very least, I can use it on a resume for a paying job later on, seeing as I get full credit for my work.

Re: Graaahhhhh can't make up my mind
Oh yeah, never told you guys why nothing graphical is coming out of my efforts yet.
Well, after struggling for ages with GIMP, I came to the conclusion that I'm no good at pixel art unless I were to take twice the time it would take to code it to create the art, and that just didn't seem like that great of an idea to me.
Currently, until I can get an artist or I can afford to pay one, I'm out of the graphical business.
