Just a thought. Maybe they are trying to ride the wave of recent iPad hype? I guess, a lot of people are considering buying an iPad. Not me, but other people?

Only if you play casual.
And really, with their new battle.net stuff, you should be able to get in more matches, designed for your playing level, instead of playing a complete noob, or an epic hardcore dude, which is one of the reasons I don't actually play 3v3 matches and the like.
The other is that Desert Strike is fun.
