LOL interwhut?

Oh Ren, you were just tipped off by my saying, "beat like a baby seal".

Seriously, though, you're right about the two games-- in fact, they are almost the same game in so many ways I'm thinking HalfLife owes Duke Nukem a few hundred grand in royalty checks.

The difference in plot writing is pretty huge, and 8 years means a big jump in graphics quality, but aside from that you're still just running around looking over your gun at piggy looking policemen and alien monsters --HL2 even stole the dripping-from-the-ceiling ones. The Duke's dialogue was hilarious and stupid, but who knows WHAT Gordon Freeman would say if he had the chance. (Not counting the awesome Machinima Freeman's Mind voice over.) Probably just as well, since the writing and voice acting for the cut scenes in HL2 are pretty painful.

That said, the story for HalfLife2 is really good on a lot of levels and if the games are going to be pretty much the same, I'm a lot more interested in the HL plotline than the Duke one.
I'll definitely be buying Episode3, and who knows, unless a whole lot of people say it blows, I'm up for another 30-50 hours of Duke, too.

That's partially the point, being the silent wisdom type is meant to be what Gordon Freeman's all about, which is why I thought that webcomic about Gordon FROHman was so funny because he was a goofball idiot who said stupid things and kept getting mistaken for Gordon Freeman somehow.

I imagine if Gordon Freeman were to talk, he wouldn't be the wisecracking type, although if he had to speak I guess it would be the subtle dry sarcastic wit that would-be "intellectuals" seem to love so much. It's almost a running joke at this stage, as much for nostalgia's sake as anything else. Just like Resident Evil keeps the shitty voice-acting, Half Life keeps the silent protagonist. Usually when protagonists have dialogue it tends to, more often than not, turn out shit. Exceptions are the Thief series (I'm just now playing Deadly Shadows) where I find Garrett's dark humour-induced punchlines to be highly hilarious (although admittedly at times I do imagine some of his wise-cracks being followed by him putting on a pair of sunglasses and Roger Daltrey yelling "WHOOOOOOOOOOOA!" in the background) and also the Mass Effect series, where Shepard's lines and voice-acting are always top-notch.

Haha, yeah, like Kehaar just mentioned. :P

The second episode is much better than the first. First isn't great.
