This topic makes me want to kick down a bathroom stall, declare "En Garde!" and attack a professional fencer while he's on the shitter to see how he would react.

Keep in mind that traffic accidents are normally unexpected because people either drive in a state of carelessness or they aren't fully aware of whats going on around them as much as they could be. People just don't drive as if their life depends on it, they use cellphones, they talk, they listen to the radio, they think about stuff and only 40-50% of their mind is actually thinking "whats going on with the traffic around me"

True story, I write texts, talk on the phone, eat food, have a drink (not an alcoholic one ), talk to people beside me, pick new music on my iPod etc. etc.

I always keep one eye on the road though, and at least one hand on the wheel usually.

I don't pay much attention either, I usually am drinking pop, listening to the radio, chatting, or in deep thought about something or other ...

Since I just got a phone this summer however I haven't really developed bad texting habits yet.

When I lived out in the country it was easy to get away with because the highways were really straight, the ground was flat, and there was very little traffic on it.

But now that I'm living in a city, I practically rear end someone every other day ...

(oddly enough, i haven't had an accident in the city yet :/)

You just got a phone this year? That's crazy, when I had my phone taken off me one time in secondary school for using it in class, I had severe withdrawl symptoms and complained to my dad until he went into school to demand it back.

I actually did rear-end someone earlier this year, and it was in the city. Our country roads are shit though. Much higher chance of crashing in the country. Roads are very narrow and potholed. Ireland is notorious for its awful infrastructure.

People have bitched at me before about not having a phone ... and i really did want to get one in high school, but eventually people stopped asking me "whats your phone number?" knowing damn well i didn't have a phone ...

I imagine it fucks up your social life a bit (I've heard "i would of called you man ... but ... you know" so often it was sickening ...)

Now that I have gone so long without one, no one asks me for my phone number and I don't really feel the need to use it ... (I've placed one call in the past 2 weeks on it)

I guess I could be one of those douchebags that makes a "IVE GOT A NEW PHONE!" group on facebook and swap numbers ... meh

Dude I had friends that had mobile phones in primary school. At the age of like 10. Now that's fucked up.

I remember when I first got a mobile phone and my best friend said "Why would you need a phone? Who are you going to call?"

I got my first phone when I was nineteen at the insistence of my then girlfriend.

I quickly regretted it.

Before then, people could only bug me in person, or when I was at home. Now they can bug me 24/7 regardless of location. And if I reject their calls or fail to reply to texts, they get all offended.

Having a cellphone isn't a bad idea to keep in contact or for emergencies, but I find a lot of the extra stuff useless. Texting? I have it blocked. Taking pictures? Meh. Surfing the internet? Why would you even do that on a tiny screen? Watching movies? The last advertisement I saw for watching movies on a cellphone stated that it had a huge, 3 inch, wide screen, high definition screen...Yes, great. Huge. 3 inches. Widescreen. Awesome.

I don't use the internet on my phone.

I occasionally take photos with my phone when there's no camera and a photo opportunity presents itself.

I don't text much, except sometimes if I'm in a lecture in college and obviously can't ring (although some lecturers allow us to leave to take or make calls), or when something only requires an answer of a few words that wouldn't really be worth ringing to say.

More often than not, I'll give preference to a phonecall rather than texting. Texting is irritating, although I used to do it quite a lot and so am quick at it. Plus, at times I feel awkward on the phone. I prefer people to be in front of me if I'm speaking to them.

You see, on a forum or a messenger conversation there isn't really that much pressure to respond immediately with something interesting to say, particularly on a forum, maybe less so in a messenger conversation.

On the phone, there is pressure to keep the conversation going because if you've nothing to say there's an awkward silence. In person this awkwardness during breaks in conversation isn't there because there's other things you can do to fill those breaks, which isn't possible on the phone because you're pretty much on the phone for the sole purpose of talking.

Actually, I'm much more shy in person, but feel more comfortable than when on the phone.

I see. Though, it all depends on whom you're talking to.

I am hardly the one calling other people so if someone calls me it's because they want something. I'll let them confront me on what it is that they want, I respond to it, and conversations is over.
