The internet

Post by Eric » Tue Feb 28, 2006 8:06 pm

Reading the "What were your first games you played?" and seeing people who played Chex Quest first made me think about the internet (seeing as AOL and Chex Quest came bundled apparantly).

The question I pose to all of you forum readers is, what was your first experience with the internet?

My answer:
I was with my parents at their friend's house, he worked for Davidson (a computer software company that doesnt really exist anymore), and he showed us a website. My mom had him show our uncle's website, http://www.booksmith.com. So my first experience with the internet was viewing http://www.booksmith.com at our family friend's house. This probably occured in 1995. Shortly after my family got a new Gateway 2000 and had AOL.

My first experience with "the internet" was BTX. That was like 1987 o'something. Then some mailboxing... A long pause... And finally some perverted AOL chat channel in possibly 1996.

My first experience with computers was when I was at a friend of mine and he had a Spectrum. I was 4 or 5 years old.

First experience was:
ping...
...
...
*goes to fiddle with random settings*
ping...
...

ping...
...
... pong!

And that was really impressive.

Hrm... boy. That's a tough one.
I can't remember my very first site that I went to, but I remember I went onto Neopets a lot (before they had ten bazillion users), and there was a thing at the top of the page that said "FREE NEOPOINTS!" I clicked it, and it popped up a page that said "Earn 200 NEOPOINTS BY SIGNING UP FOR FREE OFFERS AND SERVICES FROM OUR FRIENDS!!!" I thought "Gee whiz, free money? What is there to lose!" and happy traveled into the badlands of the internet, signing up for free nintendos, cucumbers, and everything in between left and right!
To this day, I still recieve about 500 spam emails a day directly related to Neopets.

Well... I had a Macintosh Classic long before I even knew that the internet existed (1990). My first contact with it was at an office of a friend of my father's, also on a Mac Classic, this time Colour. Looked at a web portal for a group of architects. Probably around 1995.

I've had a computer for as long as I can remember (back to around when I was 2), in 1993. I didn't even know the internet existed til around '96.

I remember dialing up to BBS and playing games from there.

Games before the net:
Doom, Heretic, Hexen.

Yes, those rock.

We only got our first PC after the internet came about. That was around '96 or '97, I suppose, when I would have only been only six or seven, so I don't really remember my first experience of the internet.

And about what LeDood said up there, I also get loads of junk e-mails for some reason. It only started happening in the last two weeks or so. I thought junking was supposed to fix the problem, though, because isn't that supposed to throw those e-mails directly into the junk next time you get one like it?

And just to check, is that name supposed to be like "Le Dood", as in "The Dude" or something like that? I wasn't sure.

Nope, it's doodle re-arranged, plus the added awesome of capital and lowercase letters. :D
