How about the updater?
How about the updater?
When is it comming? I remember seeing a news post about it.
And i want it :<
I have limited bandwidth so i can't constantly download these files. A updater would be really sweet
But i know you guys are working hard, so a headsup would be appreciated ^^

Re: How about the updater?
Honestly, after release, I don't much see the point in an updater...
Re: How about the updater?
It is coming along. Henry is working on the backend for it. No ETA though, combat is our #1 priority.
Re: How about the updater?
ok cool
they both have a point :p
before: you can just update, don't need to download the archive time and time again
after: easy updating
do you mean you don't see much point in it now? or after release?Blorx wrote:Honestly, after release, I don't much see the point in an updater...

Well, there could be individual patchers after release, just as easily, and they'd be rather small in size. >.>Ylvali wrote:Well, it could be used for updatesBlorx wrote:Honestly, after release, I don't much see the point in an updater...
Re: How about the updater?
Yeah, but they wouldn't be automatic. So you'd need to go check the website regulary, automatic updates would be much more convenient IMO. Especially for multiplayer.

With awesomium you can access websites via the Phoenix Engine
So i don't think an automatic updater would be the hardest for them to make.

Re: How about the updater?
Basically the status is that I have created the UI (that is what was shown in the blog post) and I have created the server backend. However, the actual downloading from within the app and putting the files in the correct place on all platforms is non-trivial and Henry has been gradually working on that -- plus there were some bugs in my backend implementation which are slowly being worked out.
It will definitely happen, but is not a super high priority right now, although every week it gets a little better.

Re: How about the updater?
Could be cool as a modification of an open source backup program. Give it net support, then have it set to make the network source the to be backed up and the user's install directory the destination for the backup. It'd check files on the server, then compare them to the user and update/delete as needed.
In theory anyway

Awesomium can download and render web pages its self, but there isn't a way for it to download the actual file for you. Wolfire couldn't just have it download, they'd have to do something themselves, however the HTTP protocol is extremely simple, especially if you aren't trying to support every server out there. Good to know it is going to come. You have to prioritate what's most important of course.Jeff wrote:Basically the status is that I have created the UI (that is what was shown in the blog post) and I have created the server backend. I'd just like to point out that you'll potentially get a much higher ratio of people updating and testing every alpha with a automatic updater. So there is something in it for you too, more intensive community feedback.
