The more important thing to look at is the speed at which that number grows. In early December, that number was closer to 10K, and that was after 3 years of development. So now that we are almost done with the 4th year of development, we see that it has started to really reach a level where people want to play it as a game, and sales have started reflecting that.

Also, that number is only people that have pre-ordered the game AND registered their accounts on the forums. There can be people from the NS2 promotion that did not activate their game, or now that the purchase is available on the humble bundle store, there are people that are not registering for the forums because it is not necessary to download the game.

I'm pretty excited about this last years growth, and can't wait to see where it goes from here!

Also, I've noticed there are LOADS of people waiting until the game is out before they buy it.
Taking what Anton said into account I'd estimate that's at the very least only a quarter of what the number will be after the first week it was released.
