Xbox controller support issue

I'm trying to remap an Xbox 360 controller so I can use button9 and button10 (the buttons on the thumbsticks). I have changed the config file but the game does not seem to recognise either these buttons, or maybe they are mapped to a unique name? I noticed for example you can use RT for Right Trigger rather than the button number, so I assume there has been some translation somewhere in the game?

Anyone have any suggestions?
