Looking for spam police

Post by Jeff » Mon Apr 26, 2010 6:28 pm

Hey guys, there is quite a bit of spam on the forum lately (real spam, i.e. viagra, etc.) so I want to make some more moderators!

Note that as a citizen moderator, your duty is just to delete blatant bot spam when you come across it! No deleting human posts or being a forum meanie. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer, and a couple of sentences about why you are qualified.

I'll do it.

I've been here for ages (not like it matters, other than people know I won't be being a meanie), learned how to behave, and check the forum quite a few times per day in between doing things. I'm usually around after the spam gets posted but before someone gets to it, as well.

Eh...I'm a nice guy generally? I dunno what else you want out of spam police.

I'm up for it. =]

I tend to check in on the forum once every hour or so to see if there's some interesting things to respond to. I figure that frequent appearance might be of use to get rid of spam and the likes of it quickly.

If you want real efficiency when it comes to deletion of spam, I suggest you choose multiple people from different time-zones so that there might always be someone of them online.

Another idea is to create a sub-forum that auto deletes any account that posts in it. Have a few fake threads for the spambots to post in and they'll eventually kill themselves. I've seen this implemented on other forums with fair success.

That sounds like a good idea

I'd be up for it. I usually lurk around once or twice a day, and there've been a few times spam's popped up without anyone taking care of it.

Worth a shot I suppose, but I wonder how many new users would post in that forum looking for help. :P

Though have you tried captchas? That and limited amounts of registrations per day might block a fair amount of the automated attempts. If they're human spam though, I can't imagine there's much more we can do other than delete it.

I certainly hope no captchas for posts. For registration, sure, but to me, it's just not worth it to have to do a captcha every time you want to post. I'd rather just endure the spam.

I'm admin at of a few forums, where some time ago loads of spam were posted by bots. Implementing reCAPTCHA for the forum registration solved the problem. Now there's just about 1 spam post per 4 months... compared to 4 spamposts per day it was first, the problem is solved.
I recommend you check it out at http://recaptcha.net/.

Oh, and if there's still a need for mods after installing this, I'll be happy to help. Like said, I'm a admin/moderator on a few other forums, and I check this forum about 10 times a day, so I guess that should be enough for catching spam.

We do indeed have reCAPTCHA and a few other automated anti-spam solutions. Unfortunately, these spammers are manual spammers.

Yup, then there's nothing you can do except recruiting some mods to keep the place clean.

I agree with the multiple timezones idea, you need to cover the entire clock.

Alright, after reviewing the applications, I have added the following Spam Police for now:

Blorx
BlackHole
TheBigCheese
Freshbite

We'll see how it goes, thanks for volunteering! I will add more if necessary.
