several years training with sword fighting (not fencing.) I lol at the swords are pokey weapons.
they certainly are not, they are used for both and swinging is far more effective than pokey pokey , pokey is left for daggers and spears , axes are non pokey , their effectivness lies in cleaving , which the sword was intermediate between the extremes having the option of both worlds.
a stabbing sword is the thin long ones like fencers swords or rapiers.
Or Gladius which were wide bladed but short much like a fat long dagger but not quite a short sword.
but the ones with a more sizable blade, shortswords, long swords, twohanders e.t.c were used for both stabbing and slashing.
Oh yeah , and Disarming isn't that big of a deal, yep it's dangerous- your up against a blade.
But it's not as hard to pull off as it would seem , with some practice. disarming is not a breeze but it is far safer than letting them keep the weapon in a fight.

Nobody is saying that it shouldn't be possible, just that swords should actually BE a threat.whiterabbit wrote:Oh yeah , and Disarming isn't that big of a deal, yep it's dangerous- your up against a blade.

Currently in Lugaru I get disarmed about 50% of the time. And thats on "Easier" - I can only imagine it goes up much higher than that. I can also disarm my opponents about 4/5 times (yeh, I know i'm not very good) - but I think thats FAR too much. Even for an easy setting, I should have lost my hands trying to do something that risky time and time again.
Disarming peaople with swords is a bit too easy. I would rather dodge out of the way and see if I can knock him down and take it from him. But, the fact that it's very easy to grab their sword out of their hand ruins the need to do that.
But to fix your problem, hold down the mouse button as they are approaching. YOu will automatically swing the sword when they are just in range, and will not be able to disarm you (unless it's a wolf, then the might be able to streetsweep you... or whatever that move is where they knock your feet out). It works with all weapons. It's because you cannot attack unless something's in range. it's kinda cheap though.

Such weapons were present in the Dark Tower series, although they did not have razor blades around the edges. They were instead just plates which were extremely sharp around the edges except for one area which was dull so that the user wouldn't slice their own hand off while grabbing one. They were called Oriza plates.zatoichi wrote:that's not a shuriken, that's a discus with razor blades around the edges!
I find I can disarm opponents every single attack without being hit. That is on any difficulty, and I am not nearly as good as some of the people on this forum. I find this ridiculous.GaGrin wrote:I can also disarm my opponents about 4/5 times (yeh, I know i'm not very good)

In most games (Lugaru included) all sharp weapons act kind of like lightsabers; they just go through anything. This is probably a symptom of their foundation in movie physics, where sword slices are usually simulated by just slicing right next to the target and adding special effects.
In Lugaru 2 I am going to try and make this more realistic. If you stab or slice into someone far enough to kill them, it may not be trivial to get your weapon back out again, especially if he is wearing armor. Also, it is not always that easy to get a solid hit with a sword. If the unarmed defender is very skilled, then he still won't be able to grab the attacker's sword arm from out of range and disarm him like in L1, but he may be able to deflect the attack into a less lethal one, and get close enough to make the sword useless. A sword is effective at medium-long range (by hand-to-hand terms) and in open spaces but not very effective at grappling range or in confined environments; in that case a knife is much more effective because it has much more room to move.
I've just spent the last couple days beating through Die By The Sword. It's sort of like Jedi Knight's aim control saber slashing... except it doesn't have animations (at least on mouse control, which is the only control you should be using). It's just, as you move your mouse in any direction your guy moves his sword as well. What's really cool, is that your sword and shield are solid models and don't go through other objects like enemies and their weapons. Really awesome, you could get in real 'sword locks' with the enemy while the other enemy is attacking from your other side (like, your sword is actually physically stopping the enemy's axe from hitting you, like, for reals. No movie physics at all, you can slice off limbs and stuff).
But that game is too damn hard, and has really lame ass puzzles, that are rediculessly hard to figure out without a walkthrough. Oh, and it's really damn old, like, 1998. It's got a lot of gameplay symptoms like trespasser, even though the technology is awesome and fun, it's got pretty bad levels and stuff so casual gamers don't see it as fun.
Yeah anyways, swords are really awesomely fun when they don't go through things.
