Bows and arrows

Post by Xiao » Mon Jun 05, 2006 10:44 am

Bows and arrows would be pretty fun in this game, if done right. Although aiming might be tough.

Quick camera zoom to an over-the-shoulder angle.

Well, everything about Resident Evil 4 was better than the preceding games of the series, particularly the camera effects.

I don't think I get it, was Drakan's style really that good? I've only seen footage of the one for PS2 (they don't even have clips from the PC version, 1999), and I have to say, that looks like a huge downgrade from real aiming such as Resident Evil and Blackshades.

For one, the aiming isn't even real. Drakan is a dragon flying game, so instead of aiming, you just get a lock-on system instead. It's pretty much the same as a any other game such as The Godfather or GTAIII. Who knows, maybe the old PC version is a whole lot better.

I don't know what SOS uses, but I'm sure something like that would work just as well.
Just that silly lock-on.. :?

It is my understanding that in Drakan when you were on the ground and used a bow, the game's third-person camera would swoop in to just over the the player-character's shoulder in order to aim.

An over-the-shoulder camera bow aiming mode, in my opinion, would actually fit into Lugaru's world nicely. If there aren't bows you can use, surely there will be bows that NPCs use.

efficient ranged weapons would kind of kill the melee, which is the center of this game.

how much easier would every level be if you could just shoot the wolf in the head before he even knew you were there?

To my understanding of game design, the game would not start as "Here's the best bow in the game and a billion arrows, have fun".

(On a side note, making your own arrows in L2 would be sweet.)

Man, bow and arrows would be so out of place. That would make the game extremely unbalanced.

So maybe you wouldn't start out with them, but once you got them, that's it. End of challenge.
Why fight people up close when you can do the same damage from far away?

Maybe because it would be unaccurate and the arrows would be in limited supply.

One of the things that was good about lugaru was that you COULD just kill everyone without them noticing you (difficult, though), or you could play nice, and still kill everyone.

So yeah, efficient bows aren't necessarily unbalancing.

I say "Start without it, do a hell of a lot work to make it aviable, and.. uhm.. Well, one arrow can't possibly take down a whole team of enemies, so you most probably would have to fight them anyways, hand to hand."
